MobileMoney LTD Partners with UNCDF to Empower Women and Youth-Led MSMEs in Ghana

MobileMoney LTD has reaffirmed its commitment to financial inclusion and economic empowerment by partnering with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) under the Leveraging Digital Ecosystems for Increased MSMEs’ Productivity project. Funded by the SDG Fund, the initiative seeks to enhance access to tailored digital financial solutions for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with a special focus on women and youth-led businesses in underserved communities across the Northern, Ashanti, and Western Regions.

As one of five selected service providers for the initiative, MobileMoney LTD is tasked with developing and scaling innovative digital financial services and financial literacy programs that directly address the challenges MSMEs face in accessing payments, loans, savings, and insurance. The project is designed to break down barriers and equip business owners with the tools they need to grow sustainably.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney LTD, Shaibu Haruna, emphasized the company’s commitment to inclusive growth. “At MobileMoney LTD, we believe that empowering women and young entrepreneurs through digital finance creates lasting economic value. This partnership with UNCDF aligns with our mission to drive digital inclusion for every Ghanaian and our broader goal of supporting sustainable development through innovation,” he said.

Haruna further explained that the project extends MobileMoney LTD’s strategic focus beyond its traditional payment services. “Our market research highlights the critical gaps MSMEs face in accessing tailored solutions for loans, savings, and insurance. We are now focused on developing and testing prototypes that will close these gaps, ultimately fostering sustainable business growth in the Northern, Ashanti, and Western Regions and ensuring that our contribution to the global SDG agenda has maximum national impact,” he added.

The initiative began with capacity-building sessions led by UNCDF, equipping the MobileMoney LTD team with Human-Centric Design tools and insights to guide the development of digital solutions. Building on these foundations, the company has conducted comprehensive market research to understand the unique needs of MSMEs and is now advancing to the prototype development phase. Once tested and refined, these digital solutions are expected to:

Expand access to financial services for excluded MSMEs.

Promote sustainable business growth for women and youth entrepreneurs.

Improve digital and financial literacy among business owners.

Deliver long-term positive impacts on Ghana’s economic development.

Over the years, MobileMoney LTD has consistently demonstrated its dedication to women’s economic empowerment through impactful initiatives. These include the digitization of Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) groups, provision of smartphones to market women to enhance their business operations, and seed funding for women agents to grow their enterprises. Collectively, these efforts form part of the company’s wider agenda to promote women’s participation in the digital economy and foster inclusive growth.

Launched in 2009, MobileMoney LTD, a subsidiary of MTN Ghana, now serves over seventeen million registered subscribers and offers a wide array of mobile financial services, including payment solutions, remittance, Banktech, Insurtech, savings, and loans. The company remains committed to driving financial inclusion and empowering businesses across Ghana.
