Pay student loan beneficiaries immediately – NUGS tells Students Loan Trust Fund

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has said the inability of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) to disburse money to beneficiaries is “more worrying” as students “risk not being able to write [their] exams.”

It says the inability of beneficiaries to pay their academic fees due to the non-payment of the loans is increasingly becoming “a huge problem in the face of the current situation in the country.”

According to NUGS, even the “last semester arrears have also not been paid” but schools continue to issue warnings to students who have defaulted in paying their fees in time.

“An example is University of Business and Integrated Development (UBID-Wa). KNUST is set to write mid-semester exams from 27th of February, 2023. It’s unfortunate that most of our students risk not being able to write the exams,” NUGS said in a statement.

This follows “several” complaints the Union says it has received after a long period of applications by students.

“We, by this statement, call on the Students Loan Trust Fund and the government to as a matter of urgency pay qualified applicants of the student loan immediately [because] students are at risk of deferring if loans are not paid immediately.”

The National Union of Ghana Students has, therefore, called on beneficiaries to remain calm as their concerns are being addressed.

The SLTF as of the time of filing this report had not responded to the issues raised by NUGS.
