A/R: Dilapidated Classrooms in Wawase Prompt Urgent Appeal to Government

Residents of Wawase, a community in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region, have issued an urgent appeal to the government, the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, and the Education Directorate to intervene in the construction of modern classroom infrastructure to improve teaching and learning in the area.
Speaking to the media, the residents explained that the current classroom block, which serves pupils from Primary One to Primary Six, was constructed by community members through self-help efforts. They described the building as weak, poorly ventilated, and deteriorating, with the roof and walls showing significant signs of decay. Several classrooms have developed potholes, making them unsafe for students and teachers and hampering effective learning.

The residents further highlighted issues with teachers’ accommodation. Although the community built a teachers’ bungalow, the absence of a reliable telecommunication network has forced teachers to travel long distances to the school. This has led to frequent lateness and interruptions in lessons, negatively affecting the quality of education.

In light of these challenges, the Wawase residents are calling on the government and relevant authorities to construct a modern, well-equipped classroom block. They stressed that adequate school infrastructure would not only provide a safe and conducive learning environment for students but also motivate teachers to remain within the community, thereby improving teaching outcomes.

The community concluded by urging the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, the Member of Parliament, and the Education Directorate to prioritize Wawase in upcoming development projects. Residents expressed hope that their appeal would translate into immediate action to replace the dilapidated classrooms with safe, functional, and modern educational facilities for their children.
