Speeding Toyota Hilux Ploughs Into Pedestrians at Asuoyeboah, Leaves Four Critically Injured

A tragic road accident has occurred at Asuoyeboah in Kumasi, leaving four people in critical condition after a speeding Toyota Hilux vehicle veered off the road and ploughed into a group of pedestrians and hawkers.
The incident happened earlier today, sending shockwaves through the bustling Asuoyeboah township, a busy commercial area in the Ashanti Regional capital. Eyewitnesses say the Toyota Hilux, with registration number GX 1634-18, ignored a red traffic light at the main intersection and failed to slow down as it approached a pedestrian crossing.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of the vehicle claimed his brakes failed, leaving him with no option but to swerve onto the pedestrian pavement in an attempt to avoid other vehicles. In doing so, the Hilux collided with four unsuspecting pedestrians and hawkers who were conducting their regular business activities along the roadside.
“The driver was speeding and didn’t stop when the light turned red. All of a sudden, he mounted the pavement and crashed into the people. It was a terrifying scene,” an eyewitness recounted.
All four victims sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for emergency medical care. Hospital authorities have confirmed that the victims are currently receiving treatment, with medical teams working tirelessly to stabilize their conditions.
The Ghana Police Service has since launched an investigation into the incident. Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) were quickly dispatched to the scene to control traffic and gather evidence. The damaged vehicle has been impounded as part of the ongoing probe.
Residents and local traders have expressed outrage and concern over the rising spate of road accidents in the area, blaming reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance as major contributing factors.
“We have seen too many of these accidents here. It’s about time the authorities enforced stricter traffic regulations and checked the condition of these vehicles,” a local shop owner lamented.
The accident has reignited calls for improved road safety measures, especially at busy intersections like Asuoyeboah, where heavy vehicular and human traffic intersect daily.
Authorities have assured the public that thorough investigations will be conducted, and appropriate sanctions will be applied if the driver is found culpable.
