ECG Targets Power Reliability in Ashanti with Strategic Sub-Transmission Infrastructure Drive

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving power reliability across the Ashanti Region with a series of strategic sub-transmission infrastructure projects designed to stabilise supply and support economic growth.

This assurance was given during a high-level engagement at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), where the General Managers for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, briefed the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, alongside ECG managers from all four operational areas in the region.

Presenting an overview of the sub-transmission network’s performance over the past year, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher acknowledged existing pressure points but stressed that ECG is deliberately implementing targeted interventions to address system constraints and meet rising demand. He explained that the company’s strategy extends beyond network expansion and is focused on ensuring that reliability is experienced where it matters most — in homes, businesses, hospitals, water treatment facilities, and industrial enclaves — describing the approach as people-centred and development-oriented.

At the heart of Kumasi’s power network, Ing. Fletcher disclosed that ECG, working in close collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), is upgrading one of the transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) with a 145MVA unit, alongside a comprehensive upgrade of the entire facility. According to him, the intervention is critical to reducing overloads, stabilising the network, and strengthening the backbone of electricity delivery to Greater Kumasi. He noted that the Ridge BSP upgrade, together with new substations and critical sub-transmission lines, will significantly enhance system resilience and support Ashanti’s growing economic activities.

Ing. Fletcher further revealed that new substations at Agogo, Nsuta, and Kumawu are at various stages of construction. These projects, he explained, are bringing power infrastructure closer to rapidly expanding communities while creating the capacity needed to support local enterprises, agro-processing initiatives, and small and medium-scale businesses.

Highlighting one of the most impactful interventions, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher briefed the Minister on the Adoato–Barekese sub-transmission line, which is expected to improve power supply to Suame Municipality, Atafua, Asuofua, Adankwame, Barekese, Offinso, Kodie, Mowire, and surrounding communities. He emphasised that the project will also significantly enhance electricity reliability to the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, directly contributing to improved water supply to Greater Kumasi and demonstrating the strong link between power supply, public health, and daily life.

He added that the Anwomaso–Airport Substation line will boost electricity supply to the Kumasi Airport enclave, Suame Magazine, and other high-load areas, supporting aviation operations, artisan activities, and commercial growth. In addition, the Fawoade–Agona sub-transmission line is expected to improve network stability along that corridor and ease long-standing power supply challenges affecting residents and businesses.

Ing. Fletcher also reminded the Minister that these ongoing projects build on earlier achievements by ECG, including the completion of substations serving Afari and Sewuah Hospitals, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to critical health facilities and safeguarding essential medical services.

In his response, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, commended ECG for its dedication and resilience in addressing power supply challenges in the region. He urged sustained attention to communities still experiencing supply difficulties and reaffirmed the Regional Coordinating Council’s commitment to working closely with ECG, GRIDCo, and other stakeholders to deliver lasting solutions.

Both parties reiterated their resolve to deepen collaboration in order to deliver a robust and reliable power system capable of supporting households, businesses, health facilities, and the broader development agenda of the Ashanti Region.

As these projects progress, ECG maintains that power reliability is not merely an engineering outcome but a social commitment — one that enables productivity, safeguards essential services, and allows communities across Ashanti to plan, grow, and thrive with confidence.
