ECG, GRIDCo Roll Out Key Power Projects to Strengthen Electricity Supply in Ashanti

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), has outlined a series of strategic sub-transmission infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening electricity supply reliability across the Ashanti Region.

The initiatives were highlighted during a high-level engagement at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), where the General Managers for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, briefed the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in the presence of ECG managers from all four operational areas in the region.

Presenting an overview of ECG’s sub-transmission performance over the past year, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher acknowledged existing pressure points within the network but stressed that deliberate and targeted investments are underway to address challenges and meet rising demand. He explained that ECG’s strategy goes beyond network expansion and is firmly focused on ensuring reliable power supply to homes, businesses, hospitals, water systems, and industrial enclaves, describing the approach as people-centred and development-driven.

At the core of Kumasi’s electricity network, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher disclosed that ECG and GRIDCo are upgrading one of the transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) with a 145MVA unit, alongside a comprehensive upgrade of the entire facility. He noted that the intervention is critical to reducing system overloads, stabilising the network, and reinforcing the backbone of power delivery to Greater Kumasi. According to him, the Ridge BSP upgrade, together with new substations and key sub-transmission lines, will significantly improve reliability and support the region’s expanding economic activities.

Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher further revealed that new substations at Agogo, Nsuta, and Kumawu are at various stages of construction. These projects, he explained, are designed to bring power infrastructure closer to fast-growing communities while creating additional capacity to support local enterprises, agro-processing ventures, and small and medium-scale businesses.

One of the flagship interventions highlighted during the briefing was the Adoato–Barekese sub-transmission line. Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher stated that the project will improve power supply to Suame Municipality, Atafua, Asuofua, Adankwame, Barekese, Offinso, Kodie, Mowire, and surrounding communities. He emphasised that the line will also significantly enhance electricity reliability to the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, directly contributing to improved water supply to Greater Kumasi and underscoring the close link between electricity, public health, and daily life.

He added that the Anwomaso–Airport Substation line will boost power supply to the Kumasi Airport enclave, Suame Magazine, and other high-load areas, thereby supporting aviation operations, artisan activities, and commercial growth. In addition, the Fawoade–Agona sub-transmission line is expected to improve network stability along that corridor and resolve long-standing power supply challenges affecting residents and businesses.

Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher also reminded the Minister that these ongoing projects build on earlier achievements by ECG, including the completion of substations serving Afari and Sewuah Hospitals. These interventions, he noted, have ensured uninterrupted power supply to critical health facilities, safeguarding patient care and medical services.

In his remarks, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, commended ECG and GRIDCo for their commitment and resilience in addressing power supply challenges in the region. He urged sustained attention to communities that continue to experience electricity supply difficulties and reaffirmed the Regional Coordinating Council’s readiness to work closely with ECG, GRIDCo, and other stakeholders to achieve lasting solutions.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration to deliver a robust and reliable power system capable of supporting households, businesses, health facilities, and the broader development agenda of the Ashanti Region.

As these projects progress, ECG maintains that power reliability is more than an engineering outcome; it is a social commitment that enables productivity, protects essential services, and empowers communities across Ashanti to plan, grow, and thrive with confidence.
