ECG Outlines Strategic Sub-Transmission Projects to Strengthen Power Supply Across Ashanti

When power is stable, life moves forward. This understanding set the tone for a high-level strategic engagement between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, as the General Manager for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, briefed the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, on key interventions aimed at strengthening power supply across the region.
The engagement, held at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), brought together ECG managers from all four operational areas in the Ashanti Region and focused on the state of the sub-transmission network, existing pressure points, and a range of ongoing and planned infrastructure projects designed to improve reliability and meet growing demand.

Briefing the Minister, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher reviewed ECG’s sub-transmission performance over the past year and acknowledged challenges within parts of the network. He explained that the current strategy goes beyond system expansion to ensure that reliability is experienced where it matters most — in homes, businesses, hospitals, water treatment facilities, and industrial enclaves. According to him, ECG’s approach is deliberately people-centred, with a strong focus on supporting economic activity and essential services.

At the heart of Kumasi’s power network, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher revealed that ECG, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), is upgrading one of the transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) with a 145MVA unit, alongside a comprehensive upgrade of the entire BSP. He described the intervention as critical to reducing overloads, stabilising the network, and reinforcing the backbone of electricity delivery to Greater Kumasi. He noted that the Ridge BSP upgrade, together with new substations and critical sub-transmission lines, will play a key role in supporting the region’s growth trajectory.
The General Manager further disclosed that new substations at Agogo, Nsuta, and Kumawu are at various stages of construction. These projects, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher said, are bringing power infrastructure closer to fast-growing communities while creating additional capacity to support local enterprises, agro-processing activities, and small and medium-scale businesses.

One of the most impactful projects highlighted during the briefing was the Adoato–Barekese sub-transmission line. Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher explained that the line will significantly improve power supply to Suame Municipality, Atafua, Asuofua, Adankwame, Barekese, Offinso, Kodie, Mowire, and surrounding communities. He stressed that the project will also enhance power reliability to the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, directly contributing to improved water supply for Greater Kumasi and underscoring the strong link between electricity, public health, and daily life.

He added that the Anwomaso–Airport Substation line will boost supply to the Kumasi Airport enclave, Suame Magazine, and other high-load areas, supporting aviation operations, artisan clusters, and commercial activities. Similarly, the Fawoade–Agona sub-transmission line is expected to improve network stability along that corridor and ease long-standing supply constraints affecting residents and businesses.
Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher also reminded the Minister that these ongoing projects build on earlier achievements by ECG, including the completion of substations serving Afari and Sewuah Hospitals. These interventions, he noted, have helped ensure uninterrupted power supply to critical health facilities, safeguarding patient care and medical operations.

In his response, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, commended the ECG team for their dedication and resilience in addressing power challenges across the region. He urged the company to maintain sustained attention to communities that continue to experience supply difficulties, while reaffirming the Regional Coordinating Council’s commitment to working closely with ECG, GRIDCo, and other stakeholders.
Both parties pledged continued collaboration to deliver a robust and reliable power system that supports households, businesses, health facilities, and the broader development agenda of the Ashanti Region.

As these projects advance, the message from ECG remains clear: power reliability is not merely an engineering outcome, but a social promise — one that enables productivity, protects essential services, and allows communities across Ashanti to plan, grow, and thrive with confidence.
