A police officer and a civilian were at the weekend arrested following the stealing of two AK47 rifles from a police post in Mandera.

The two weapons with 60 bullets were later recovered from a shallow ground where they had been buried about 400 meters away from Olla police post.

The motive of the incident is under probe, police said.

A police officer who was in charge of the station realized the two weapons were missing on June 17.

This prompted the arrest of a civilian who had earlier on been spotted at the station.

According to police, on interrogation, the suspect informed the officers he had been handed the weapons by one of the officers at the station.

He and the officer later led police to a place where they had buried the weapons.

Police suspect the two planned to sell the weapons and later transport them for an unknown mission.

A further probe into the incident is ongoing.

The officer and suspect are Monday expected in court to face various charges, police said.

Meanwhile, police in Hindi, Lamu, are investigating an incident in which a man was shot and killed by unknown gunmen.

Mohamed Shee Omar, 25, was shot in the chest and died on the spot as he and a woman rode on a motorcycle towards Hindi town.

The woman told police an unknown gunman shot them killing Omar.

The two fell off but the rider escaped the scene.

Police say they are yet to establish those behind the shooting.

On examination, police said, the young man was bleeding from his chest but the woman was not wounded.

Police moved the body to the mortuary pending further probe.

The area is currently under intense operations following reports there elements of al Shabaab terror group hiding there.

The gang has been unleashing terror ambushing security agencies in a series of attacks.

More security operatives have been deployed in the area to tame the trend.
