MTN Ghana has reinforced its commitment to youth empowerment, financial literacy, and digital education by sensitising over 1,500 students on safe Mobile Money usage, fraud prevention, and responsible data management during the 2026 Success Africa Summit, held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Great Hall.
The 20th edition of the summit, themed “Beyond Vision: Dare, Act & Achieve,” convened students from second-cycle and tertiary institutions alongside policymakers, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, providing a platform for mentorship, learning, and engagement on leadership, innovation, and digital skills.

During the summit, Nana Addai, Mobile Money Manager for Northern Ghana at MTN Ghana, educated students on the evolution of Mobile Money (MoMo), highlighting how the platform has transformed over the past 17 years. He explained that what started as a simple service for deposits, withdrawals, and transfers has now become a comprehensive digital financial ecosystem offering advanced savings, investment products, and transaction services.

Highlighting savings products such as Yellow Save, Nana Addai explained that students and other users can earn interest ranging from 5% to 10%, presenting a convenient and secure alternative to traditional informal savings systems such as susu. He emphasised that Mobile Money allows users to save, invest, and manage their finances while maintaining full control over their funds.

In delivering critical advice on account security, Nana Addai strongly cautioned students, saying, “Never share your Mobile Money PIN with anyone, not even your partner.” He underscored that the PIN is the most important safeguard of a Mobile Money account and sharing it could expose users to fraud and financial loss.

He further explained that most Mobile Money fraud does not occur through hacking, but through social engineering, where fraudsters manipulate users into authorising transactions themselves. Fraudsters often impersonate friends, family, or colleagues via WhatsApp or social media, claiming emergencies and requesting urgent money transfers.

“Fraudsters need your cooperation to steal your money. If you do not approve a transaction, the money cannot leave your account,” Nana Addai emphasised. He urged students to always verify any request for money, enable two-step verification on messaging apps, and avoid responding to suspicious calls, messages, or links requesting personal information.
To protect customers further, Nana Addai explained that MTN Ghana has strengthened its internal systems, allowing the company to block not only fraudulent phone numbers but also the devices used in suspicious activities. He added that MTN works closely with security agencies to track and prosecute fraudsters and regularly conducts public education initiatives to enhance digital financial literacy.

He encouraged students to download and use the MoMo mobile application, which provides detailed transaction histories, advanced savings management, and convenient financial services, all with minimal data usage of approximately 300MB.
Following Nana Addai, Dzudzorfe Hadzor, Coordinator for Data Devices and Home at MTN Ghana, engaged students on responsible data usage. She explained that high data consumption often results from smartphone apps running automatic downloads and background updates, particularly social media applications such as TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

Dzudzorfe Hadzor guided students on adjusting app settings to control automatic downloads, using larger bundles for better long-term value, and taking advantage of midnight and app-specific bundles to save on data costs.

Students actively interacted with MTN representatives, asking questions and expressing gratitude for the practical guidance provided. Many highlighted that the insights shared would help them avoid fraud, manage their finances responsibly, and optimise data usage for academic and personal purposes.

The 2026 Success Africa Summit continues to serve as an essential platform for mentoring and inspiring young Africans, equipping them with the knowledge, tools, and skills to navigate the digital age safely and efficiently. With MTN Ghana’s continued support, the summit is expected to expand to other regions in the coming weeks, reaching thousands more students across the country.
