Lions International Empowers Over 100 Youths with Vocational Skills for Economic Independence

The Accra Aquila Lions Club has successfully trained over 100 individuals in vocational skills as part of their August initiative aimed at empowering needy and vulnerable communities. The training took place on Saturday, August 17th, 2024, in Akyem Small London, Asene Manso Akroso District, Eastern Region, under the theme “Empowering Futures: Coconut Biscuit (Poolo) Entrepreneurship for Young Girls.”

The training program covered essential business skills including setting up enterprises, bookkeeping, customer relations, and self-empowerment. Participants were specifically trained in making coconut biscuits (Poolo), a local delicacy, to help them establish self-reliance and economic independence.

Lion Deloris Enyo Awalime, treasurer and Charter President of the Accra Aquila Lions Club, explained that the choice of Akyem Small London was based on a needs assessment revealing high unemployment rates among local youth. Recognizing the potential in these young individuals, the club aimed to provide them with both the skills and startup funds necessary to launch their own businesses.

In addition to the vocational training, the club also provided slightly used clothing for children and youth in the community. Regular follow-up sessions will be conducted to monitor the progress of the participants and offer ongoing support.

Lion President Bernice Barnieh, who is the 2024/2025 President of the Accra Aquila Lions Club, emphasized that Small London was selected due to its status as one of the less privileged communities in the district. The club targeted five girls for special support to make a meaningful impact.

Hon. Alex Lartey, the Assembly Member for the community, expressed gratitude for the Lions Club’s efforts and urged them to extend their support to other communities in the area.

The beneficiaries expressed heartfelt thanks to the Lions Club and committed to applying the skills and resources provided to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
