KMA Boss Cracks the Whip: Street Traders and Stray Cattle to Be Cleared from Kumasi by May 1

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, also known as King Zuba, has issued a final ultimatum to illegal street traders and livestock owners as part of a renewed push to restore order and cleanliness in the Ashanti Regional capital.

At a press briefing in Kumasi, the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) expressed outrage over the growing level of indiscipline within the city. He warned that traders who continue to sell on the roads, obstructing traffic and endangering lives, have until May 1, 2025, to vacate or be forcibly removed.

“The era of lawlessness must end. From May 1, if you’re still trading in the streets, expect to be removed—by force if necessary. This city must reflect the dignity of the Golden Stool,” King Zuba stated passionately.

Although no immediate alternative spaces have been provided for the affected traders, the KMA boss assured the public that new satellite markets are being planned to accommodate hawkers in the near future.

The KMA is also preparing to launch a major desilting operation across the metropolis to address poor sanitation and prevent flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

In a dramatic turn, the mayor announced that stray cattle roaming the city will no longer be tolerated. He warned that beginning May 1, any such animals found in the metropolis will be slaughtered, and the meat will be donated to the Kumasi Central Prisons.

“We are not in a jungle. Cattle must not be competing with humans for space on our streets. Any found loitering will be killed. The meat will go to the prisons. It’s that simple,” he declared.

The strong message has drawn a wave of reactions across the city. While many residents welcome the tough approach to sanitation and order, others have called for more humane measures that consider the livelihoods of traders and cattle owners.

With the May 1 enforcement date fast approaching, all attention is now on the KMA to see how the directives will be executed—and whether Kumasi will finally regain its long-lost discipline and prestige.
