Government Urged to Develop Comprehensive Policies to Regulate AI for Educational Advancement

The government has been called upon to develop and implement comprehensive policies to guide the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in Ghana’s education system to enhance quality education while mitigating potential risks.

The Chief of Feyiase, Nana Agyei Dwamena, made this call during the commemoration of the International Day of Education organized by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation. The event, themed “Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation: AI and Education”, highlighted the growing importance of AI in the education sector and the need for proper regulation to ensure its benefits are fully realized.

Speaking to the media, Nana Agyei Dwamena noted that AI has become a transformative force globally and has a significant role to play in Ghana’s education system. However, he emphasized that without stringent policies and measures, the misuse of AI could pose serious challenges.

“Artificial intelligence is here to stay, and its potential to revolutionize education in Ghana is undeniable. That said, it is crucial for the government to engage stakeholders and policy writers to create robust regulations that ensure AI is used ethically and effectively,” he stated.

Nana Agyei Dwamena further cautioned against the abuse of AI, stressing that fraudsters could exploit the technology for dubious purposes if left unregulated. He added that while AI is an invaluable tool, its role is to complement human efforts rather than replace human capital in national development.

He also debunked misconceptions that the adoption of AI would render human labor redundant, asserting that AI should be seen as a tool to enhance productivity and efficiency in education.

On his part, Mr. Kwaku Oppong Amponsah, Chief Executive Officer of Adwinsa Publications and an ardent supporter of the Otumfuo Foundation, urged the government to maintain the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, describing it as a pivotal initiative for educational access.

“Free SHS has provided countless students with access to secondary education, which is critical for national development. However, the government must conduct a comprehensive review of the programme to address existing challenges and ensure its sustainability,” Mr. Oppong Amponsah advised.

He also encouraged students to use social media responsibly, emphasizing its potential to serve as an educational resource when used effectively.

The International Day of Education event served as a platform for stakeholders, policymakers, and educators to deliberate on the role of AI in transforming education. They unanimously agreed on the urgency of crafting policies to regulate AI and ensure it is used to advance Ghana’s educational goals.

As the world embraces automation and AI, Ghana must take proactive steps to safeguard its education system while leveraging the technology to create a more inclusive and efficient learning environment.
