The government has announced plans to demonopolize waste management in Ghana as part of a broader strategy to tackle the country’s complex environmental challenges.
The Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Mr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, disclosed this during a familiarization tour of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in Accra on Monday.
He emphasized that the move is not aimed at targeting existing waste management companies but rather to create an inclusive system where multiple stakeholders can contribute to solving environmental issues.
“The demonopolization of waste management is not to target existing waste management companies but rather to ensure that everyone is involved in this fight,” he stated.
The Minister also urged the EPA to strengthen its education and sensitization campaigns against illegal mining (galamsey) and environmental pollution.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the fight against galamsey, he warned that individuals found engaging in illegal mining would face strict legal consequences, regardless of their social status.
The Acting CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, assured the Minister of the EPA’s full support in achieving the ministry’s environmental agenda.
