ECG Commissions 33kV Feeder to Guarantee Reliable Power for Obuasi and Surrounding Communities

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully commissioned a new 33kV sub-transmission feeder designed to enhance electricity supply and reliability for Obuasi and its surrounding communities.
The feeder, which connects to GRIDCo’s recently upgraded 50/66MVA transformer, was energized on Saturday, August 24, 2025. This major step promises a more stable, efficient, and dependable power supply for households, businesses, and industries across the enclave.

The project was completed after 49 days of intensive work, during which ECG deployed a standby team of engineers who traveled weekly between Kumasi and Obuasi to sustain operations and address technical challenges while installations were ongoing. Their dedication ensured uninterrupted service even as both ECG and GRIDCo installations were being upgraded.

As part of the works, ECG disconnected its existing 11kV cables and connected new ones to GRIDCo’s cable gantry and its 33kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) panels at the Obuasi Substation. With this successful integration, the entire power distribution system in the area has now been strengthened to meet the growing demand for electricity.

At the commissioning, ECG expressed deep appreciation to its Ashanti Sub-Transmission team, the Ashanti South engineers, GRIDCo staff, and the contractor, all of whom worked tirelessly—sometimes in heavy rain—until the feeder was commissioned at exactly 8:34 PM.

The company noted that the development would not only improve the comfort of households but also boost the operations of businesses and industries in Obuasi, creating the foundation for economic growth and development.

“Today marks a significant turning point in our service to Obuasi. With this 33kV feeder, customers can now be assured of stable and reliable electricity supply for many years to come,” ECG stated.
