Royal Kente Gala 2025 Launched in Kumasi to Preserve Ghana’s Cultural Heritage

The Royal Kente Gala 2025 has been officially launched at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi, with a renewed call to safeguard Ghana’s world-renowned Kente heritage while promoting it across the globe.

The launch, held under the theme “Preserving Royal Kente Heritage, Weaving Global”, marked the beginning of a year-long celebration designed to highlight the cultural, historical, and economic value of Royal Kente. The program is expected to climax with a grand gala on December 20, 2025.

Speaking at the event, the President of the Royal Kente Weavers and Sellers Association (ROKWESA), Mr. Kwame Nyame, traced the history of the revered cloth to the 17th century. He recalled the legend of two brothers who first developed weaving skills by observing a spider’s web—an inspiration that birthed the Kente tradition.

According to him, Royal Kente was historically woven exclusively for Ashanti royalty, particularly the Asantehene, and produced by the king’s personal weavers. These master artisans, he explained, were not only responsible for clothing royalty but also for safeguarding the traditions, values, and artistry behind the weaving craft.

“Royal Kente was more than just attire—it was a symbol of authority, spirituality, and elevated social standing. It clothed kings, chiefs, and revered leaders, embodying dignity and identity,” Mr. Nyame stated.

He added that contemporary royal weavers continue to uphold these sacred traditions by maintaining exclusive patterns, advancing the industry, and positioning Royal Kente as a global heritage brand.

Highlighting upcoming activities, Mr. Nyame announced that the gala will include cultural exhibitions, academic lectures, and weaving showcases in the months ahead, culminating in the grand celebration in December.

He further reaffirmed ROKWESA’s commitment to ensuring that Royal Kente remains not merely a fabric but a “potent symbol of Ghanaian heritage, history, and identity that must resonate across generations and borders.”

The launch brought together traditional leaders, cultural enthusiasts, fashion designers, students, and stakeholders from the creative arts industry, all united in their resolve to sustain the legacy of Royal Kente while promoting it to the world.
