Historic Milestone: ECG Brings Stable, Efficient Power to Obuasi with 33kV Commissioning

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has achieved a historic milestone with the successful commissioning of a 33kV sub-transmission feeder to deliver stable and efficient electricity supply to Obuasi and surrounding communities.

The feeder, which connects to GRIDCo’s upgraded 50/66MVA transformer, was energized on Saturday, August 24, 2025. This marks a major breakthrough in strengthening Obuasi’s power infrastructure and guaranteeing reliable electricity for homes, businesses, and industries in the area.

The project was executed within 49 days of intense work and sacrifice by ECG engineers, contractors, and GRIDCo staff. Throughout this period, ECG deployed a standby team of engineers who traveled weekly between Kumasi and Obuasi to sustain operations and swiftly resolve technical challenges while the installation process continued.

A critical aspect of the project involved ECG replacing its old 11kV cables with new ones connected to GRIDCo’s cable gantry and its 33kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) panels at the Obuasi Substation. This upgrade is expected to improve the stability of power distribution across the enclave.

At the commissioning ceremony, ECG commended the dedication of its Ashanti Sub-Transmission and Ashanti South teams, as well as GRIDCo staff and the contractor, who braved difficult conditions—including heavy rains—to ensure the project was completed and energized at exactly 8:34 PM.

The company stressed that this milestone would have far-reaching benefits for the Obuasi area, boosting economic activities by ensuring uninterrupted electricity for industries, while providing households with the comfort of consistent power supply.

“This is a historic moment for Obuasi. With the 33kV feeder now in operation, customers can look forward to stable, efficient, and reliable electricity that will support growth and development for years to come,” ECG stated.
