DTI Donates Tools, Refurbishes Welding, Fashion, Carpentry, and Upholstery Workshops at KTI

The Design and Technology Institute (DTI) has handed over refurbished workshops and modern tools to the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI), marking a major breakthrough in efforts to transform Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana. The refurbished facilities cover four key departments at KTI—Welding and Fabrication, Fashion, Carpentry, and Upholstery—and are expected to give students access to practical, industry-standard training while also opening doors for innovation, employability, and entrepreneurship.

The initiative forms part of the DTI-KTI Precision Quality™ Strategic Collaboration, a bold partnership supported by the Mastercard Foundation that is designed to embed Precision Quality™ (PQ) training into technical education in Ghana. Through this collaboration, DTI is not only retooling and upgrading KTI’s workshops but also working closely with faculty to integrate the PQ curriculum into all programmes. This approach, built on discipline, consistency, and excellence, seeks to ensure that Ghanaian youth are well prepared to meet both local and international workforce demands.

At the inauguration ceremony held at the KTI Auditorium, the Founder and President of DTI, Constance Elizabeth Swaniker, explained that the handover was not merely about equipment but about creating an enabling environment for students to thrive. She said the Precision Quality™ philosophy represents a mindset shift in Ghana’s education system, one that encourages learners to do things right the first time and to value continuous improvement. According to her, the refurbished workshops and new tools will equip students with the practical confidence and creativity required to excel in an increasingly competitive world of work.

The Principal of Kumasi Technical Institute, Mr. Gabriel Kingsford Osei, described the collaboration as a historic turning point for KTI and the wider TVET sector. He expressed appreciation to DTI and its partners, noting that the upgraded workshops would provide students with competency-based training, internships aligned with industry needs, and the soft skills required for professional success. He stressed that the partnership reflects a broader truth—that no institution can achieve lasting transformation in isolation—and that collaboration between schools, government, industry, and communities is the surest way to create impact. He urged students to seize the opportunity with diligence and pride, emphasising that their education will now be more relevant and their skills more competitive.

The inauguration also saw the official launch of the Precision Quality™ Internship Program and the commissioning of a Precision Quality™ Innovation Hub at KTI. These facilities are expected to serve as national models for redefining work-based learning and will benefit not only KTI students but also DTI interns, learners from other institutions, and unemployed youth in surrounding communities. The hub will promote applied research, entrepreneurship training, and the development of industry-driven curricula, setting a new standard for workforce development in Ghana.

The event brought together representatives from the Ghana TVET Service, the Association of Ghana Industries, COPTI Ashanti, local assembly members, parents, guardians, and community stakeholders. Their presence highlighted the collective commitment to advancing Ghana’s TVET agenda and ensuring that technical education remains relevant, inclusive, and impactful.

As Ghana continues its journey toward building a resilient and future-ready workforce, the DTI-KTI collaboration is widely seen as a bold step in aligning education with industry expectations. By donating tools and refurbishing the Welding, Fashion, Carpentry, and Upholstery workshops, DTI has not only strengthened KTI’s training capacity but also reaffirmed the promise that technical education can be the key to unlocking innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth for the nation.
