KMA Orders Suspension of Trading, Traffic for Citywide Sanitation Drive on November 1

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced the suspension of all trading and vehicular movements within key parts of the city on Saturday, November 1, 2025, to pave the way for a metro-wide clean-up exercise aimed at restoring environmental cleanliness across the metropolis.

In a public statement issued and signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Assembly, Madam Henrietta A.K. Aboagye, the KMA said the exercise forms part of the Government of Ghana’s new national sanitation campaign, which mandates all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to organize monthly clean-up activities to promote public hygiene and environmental sustainability.

The clean-up operation, scheduled to commence at 6:00 a.m., will cover major sections of the Central Business District (CBD) and its adjoining communities — areas that serve as Kumasi’s busiest commercial zones and generate high volumes of waste daily.

The designated operational areas include:

Zoo Roundabout through Pampaso to Otumfuo Roundabout

Otumfuo Roundabout through Acheamfour Market, MIN Roundabout to St. Louis College

Otumfuo Roundabout to Dr. Mensah, Boss FM, through Central Market, Asafo Interchange, and Asafo Market stretch

Roman Hill Down through Aboabo Station to Alabar

The Assembly explained that all trading activities and vehicular movements within these operational zones will be temporarily halted during the period of the exercise. This directive, according to the statement, is to ensure that sanitation teams, traders, and residents can work together efficiently without obstruction from commercial or vehicular activities.

Madam Aboagye emphasized that the initiative seeks to encourage community participation, environmental consciousness, and a renewed civic responsibility among the people of Kumasi. She urged all market women, commercial drivers, and residents to join the exercise wholeheartedly, adding that keeping the city clean is a collective duty and not the sole responsibility of the Assembly.

“A clean environment promotes healthy living, reduces diseases, and enhances the beauty and image of our metropolis. The KMA is therefore calling on all stakeholders to actively support this important activity,” she stated.

The statement further indicated that the closure of shops and trading centers during the exercise will depend on the level of participation. If traders and shop owners fully engage in the clean-up, the exercise will end at 11:00 a.m., allowing normal business operations to resume. However, if they fail to participate, the Assembly will keep all affected shops and markets closed until 2:00 p.m.

The KMA noted that this directive is not meant to inconvenience anyone but to promote active involvement in the government’s drive to make Kumasi and other Ghanaian cities cleaner, safer, and more environmentally friendly. The Assembly also assured that adequate logistics and personnel will be deployed to ensure a smooth and effective operation across all identified locations.

As part of the broader “Keep Kumasi Clean and Green” campaign, the metro-wide clean-up exercise will involve collaboration between Zoomlion Ghana Limited, various market associations, transport unions, and youth groups within the metropolis. The KMA has also tasked its Environmental Health and Sanitation Department to monitor compliance and ensure full adherence to the directive.

Residents and business owners have been reminded that failure to observe the suspension order or refusal to participate in the exercise may attract sanctions under existing sanitation by-laws.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders to restore the city’s reputation as the “Garden City of West Africa”, by sustaining regular clean-up activities, improving waste management systems, and promoting public awareness about sanitation and environmental health.

The KMA concluded by encouraging residents to view the November 1 exercise as a civic duty and a shared opportunity to make Kumasi a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful city for all.
