Press Release: Asanko Gold Promises Accountability After Fatal Confrontation at Amansie West Mine

Asanko Gold Mine has pledged full accountability and cooperation with authorities following a deadly confrontation between military security personnel and members of the Mpatoam community on September 9, 2025. The incident, which occurred on the company’s mining concession in the Amansie West District, left one person dead and caused damage to equipment belonging to contractors.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Asanko Gold confirmed that the military personnel involved were deployed under a state-sanctioned security arrangement coordinated through the Ghana Chamber of Mines to protect its operational areas and workers.
According to the statement, tensions escalated when community members allegedly attacked military camps and invaded operational areas, triggering a clash that ended in tragedy.
“The Company shares in the community’s grief over the tragic loss of life and extends its heartfelt condolences to the affected families during this difficult time,” Asanko Gold stated.
The company emphasized its commitment to transparency, justice, and peaceful coexistence with host communities. It added that it is working closely with law enforcement agencies, government representatives, and traditional leaders to ensure calm is restored and the circumstances surrounding the incident are fully investigated.
Asanko Gold further assured that its management is dedicated to supporting ongoing investigations, pledging to provide authorities with all necessary assistance to bring clarity and resolution to the matter.
The incident has drawn attention to longstanding tensions between mining companies and local communities in Ghana’s gold-rich Ashanti Region, where issues of land use, security deployment, and resource distribution often fuel mistrust. Experts and community advocates have called for stronger dialogue platforms and conflict resolution measures to prevent such violent confrontations.
Asanko Gold Mine, which plays a major role in Ghana’s gold production, reiterated its commitment to responsible and sustainable mining operations, emphasizing that it will continue to engage local leaders to address grievances and promote development in the Amansie West District.
“We remain committed to building lasting partnerships with our host communities and will continue working hand-in-hand with stakeholders to ensure peace and stability,” the company added.
Meanwhile, security agencies and traditional authorities are working together to stabilize the situation in Mpatuam and surrounding communities, as investigations into the tragic clash continue.
