Muslims consider any lifeless man or woman to be unclean. Being unclean does not imply that the corpse is soiled, but it does suggest the presence of sin. The longer a dead body remains in contact with the living, the more unclean the living become.
There is as little interaction as possible between the living and the dead, which is why even women and teenagers are not permitted to approach a corpse.
The immediate burial of a dead body serves the purpose of maintaining the cleanliness of the dwelling and minimizing interaction. This was also a common practice in early Judaism, where dead bodies were thought to make people ceremonially unclean, and anyone who touched a dead body was quarantined for a period of time until he or she was cleansed.
