WESCO College of Education Graduates 450 Teachers Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) at 16th Congregation

Wesley College of Education (WESCO) in Kumasi has graduated 450 Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) students at its 16th Congregation Ceremony, celebrating academic excellence and launching a bold new vision to transform teacher education in Ghana through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Held under the theme “Transforming Teacher Education with AI: Advancing the WESCO Agenda for Excellence,” the ceremony brought together key stakeholders including educationists, policymakers, traditional leaders, parents, and alumni. The event marked not only the end of an academic journey for hundreds of students but also the beginning of a transformative era in teaching, where digital literacy and technological competence are becoming essential components of classroom practice.

Delivering the keynote address, Associate Professor Kofi Sarpong Adu-Manu of the University of Ghana urged the graduates to embrace the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence to reshape learning experiences and educational delivery in Ghana. He emphasized that while technology offers immense tools, it is the teacher who remains the driver of change.

“AI will not change Ghana; you will,” Prof. Adu-Manu declared. “Teachers must become AI-literate, ethically conscious, and ready to integrate technology to make education more inclusive, engaging, and impactful.”

He applauded WESCO’s ongoing partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), through which the college has implemented an AI-enabled mentoring model. The initiative has successfully trained 100 student-teachers and 25 mentors to develop inclusive Open Educational Resources (OERs) using AI tools — a pioneering effort in Ghana’s Colleges of Education.

The Principal of Wesley College of Education, Dr. Kennedy Ameyaw Baah, in his address, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to becoming a global leader in teacher education through innovation, professionalism, and inclusiveness. He announced significant growth in academic capacity, revealing that 12 faculty members now hold PhDs, doubling from six last year. Additionally, 30 other lecturers are currently pursuing doctoral studies.

Dr. Baah noted that WESCO had secured a grant of 19,000 Canadian dollars under COL’s STEM project to enhance the use of AI in teacher training. He emphasized the college’s focus on inclusive education, highlighting the support provided to 23 visually impaired students who are actively participating in academic programs.

He also outlined ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at improving teaching and learning conditions. These include a 2,000-seat auditorium, a 300-bed hostel facility funded by GETFund, and a staff bungalow sponsored by Ghana Gas. He appealed for additional support from the government and stakeholders to complete a lecture complex and provide reliable transportation for teacher trainees.

The 2025 graduating cohort delivered an impressive academic performance. Out of the 450 students, 256 graduated with First Class Honours, 183 obtained Second Class Upper Division, and 11 earned Second Class Lower Division. This strong academic showing was praised by both college authorities and guests as a testament to the quality of teaching and student commitment at WESCO.

Describing the ceremony as “The WESCO Moment,” Prof. Adu-Manu said the college is leading a new direction in teacher preparation, where competence, creativity, and compassion meet technology and innovation. He added that the graduates are now better positioned to handle the dynamic demands of the modern classroom.

“As you go into the world, go not just as teachers, but as pioneers — leaders of Ghana’s future classrooms. You have been trained not just to teach, but to transform,” he told the graduates.

The 16th Congregation of Wesley College of Education will be remembered as a celebration of achievement, inclusion, and a commitment to future-readiness. With its new AI-driven direction and unwavering focus on quality and access, WESCO is positioning itself as a trailblazer in Ghana’s education sector — one graduate at a time.
