UTV’s Stephen Sekyere Honored with National Heroes Award for Outstanding Journalism and Community Impact

United Television’s (UTV) Obuasi Correspondent, Hon. Stephen Sekyere, has been honored with the prestigious National Heroes Award for his exceptional service in journalism and his significant contributions to community development in the Ashanti Region.
The award, presented at a grand ceremony held in Obuasi over the weekend recognized Hon. Sekyere’s consistent efforts in using media as a tool to highlight societal challenges, amplify underrepresented voices, and drive meaningful change at the grassroots level. The event, organized by the Ghana Heroes Foundation, brought together government officials, traditional leaders, media professionals, civil society actors, and members of the public.
Hon. Stephen Sekyere, known widely for his fearless and impactful reporting on UTV, has earned respect across the Obuasi municipality and beyond for his commitment to truth, advocacy journalism, and developmental storytelling. From issues in education and health to infrastructure and governance, his reports have not only informed the public but also spurred responses from authorities and stakeholders.
Beyond his media work, Hon. Sekyere also serves as the Assembly Member for the Oseikrom Electoral Area, a dual role that has amplified his impact on community welfare. Under his leadership, Oseikrom has witnessed notable improvements such as school renovations, sanitation campaigns, drainage construction, and youth empowerment initiatives.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Sekyere thanked the organizers and dedicated the award to the people of Obuasi, his media colleagues, and the residents of Oseikrom. “This award is more than personal recognition—it reflects the power of media to influence development and the importance of community-focused journalism. I share this honor with the people of Obuasi, whose stories have inspired me to work harder,” he said.
The Ghana Heroes Foundation applauded his unique role in bridging journalism and local governance, describing him as a role model who embodies integrity, service, and humility. “Stephen Sekyere exemplifies what it means to be a modern hero—using the power of the pen and the microphone to transform lives and communities,” one of the event organizers noted.
Colleagues from UTV and fellow journalists across the region have celebrated the award as a win for the entire media fraternity, particularly for journalists who risk much to tell the truth and uplift their communities.
As messages of congratulations continue to pour in, the story of Stephen Sekyere stands as a powerful reminder of the vital role responsible journalism plays in national development and local transformation.
