Serwaa Nyarko, T.I Amass, and Prince of Peace to Represent Kumasi Metropolis in National HIV/AIDS Quiz

Three schools have emerged victorious in the Metropolis HIV/AIDS Quiz Competition, earning their spots in the upcoming national inter-Senior High School (SHS) championship. Serwaa Nyarko Senior High School, T.I Ahmadiya Senior High School (T.I Amass), and Prince of Peace Senior High School demonstrated exceptional knowledge and skills to qualify for the national stage.

The metropolis contest featured 12 schools battling it out for the prestigious opportunity. Two preliminary rounds culminated in a fiercely competitive final that determined the three representatives for the metropolis .

In the final round, Serwaa Nyarko SHS and T.I Amass tied with an impressive 23 points each to secure their slots. Prince of Peace SHS, on the other hand, had to overcome Kumasi Wesley Girls SHS through a nerve-wracking tiebreaker question after both schools finished with 21 points apiece.

St. Hubert Seminary SHS came fourth with 18 points, while Kumasi Secondary Technical School and Kumasi Anglican Secondary School placed fifth and sixth with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Other participants in the regional competition included Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS, Armed Forces SHS, Islamic SHS, Kumasi Senior High School, Kumasi Girls SHS, and JA Kufuor SHS.

Purpose of the Quiz

The contest was organized as part of efforts to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among Ghanaian youth. Speaking at the event, Madam Felicia Owusu Agyemang, Deputy Coordinating Director and Metro Focal Person on HIV/AIDS, highlighted the importance of educating young people about the pandemic.

She stated, “Broadening the knowledge base of the youth is crucial in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Through such quizzes, we can empower students to become ambassadors of change within their communities.”

The program, which was initiated by the Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Samuel Pyne, aimed to promote awareness of HIV/AIDS among the youth. The event provided a platform for students to engage with critical health issues while encouraging them to play an active role in disseminating vital information on HIV/AIDS prevention and care in their communities.

Madam Olivia Graham, the Regional Technical Officer of the Ghana AIDS Commission, echoed similar sentiments. She emphasized that the initiative serves as an academic exercise that not only deepens students’ understanding of HIV/AIDS but also equips them to educate others about prevention and treatment.

The Road Ahead

The national quiz, which will feature regional champions from across Ghana, promises to be a vibrant platform for showcasing knowledge on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and awareness. The date and venue for the championship are yet to be announced, but expectations are high for the Ashanti Region’s representatives.

As Serwaa Nyarko SHS, T.I Amass, and Prince of Peace SHS prepare for the national stage, their impressive performance in the metropolis competition has already positioned them as strong contenders. This initiative continues to underscore the importance of involving the youth in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the knowledge and tools to combat the disease.
