MTN Ghana has reinforced its commitment to education, youth empowerment, and national development through its flagship Bright Scholarship Awards, providing life-changing opportunities to 500 students and teachers for the 2025/2026 academic year. The telecom giant also announced plans to expand the initiative over the next three years to support a total of 1,500 beneficiaries, marking a significant milestone in its mission to transform communities through education.

The 2025 Bright Scholarship Awards ceremony, held on Monday, September 8, at the Faculty of Law Auditorium of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, brought together key stakeholders, educators, government officials, and families to celebrate academic excellence and the promise of a brighter future for Ghanaian youth. Since its relaunch in 2018, MTN’s Bright Scholarship program has already funded the education of 720 students nationwide, fully covering tuition, accommodation, and stipends.

In his keynote speech, delivered on his behalf by Dr. Isaac Mate, General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value at MTN Ghana, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett underscored the company’s belief in education as a powerful equalizer. He highlighted the remarkable achievements of the scholarship beneficiaries, which include producing valedictorians, best graduating students, and hundreds of First Class Honours graduates. Dr. Mate revealed that MTN is committed to further scaling up its investment in education, targeting students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as those pursuing vocational and technical fields. The expansion will also include teachers seeking to upgrade their qualifications in these critical areas, ensuring a long-term ripple effect on Ghana’s education system.

The 2025 edition of the Bright Scholarship attracted an overwhelming 3,691 applications, reflecting the growing reputation of the program as one of the most competitive and prestigious scholarship opportunities in Ghana. After rigorous shortlisting and interviews, 500 exceptional individuals from 42 public institutions across the country emerged as this year’s beneficiaries. Among them are 300 undergraduates pursuing degrees in STEM and technical disciplines and 200 teachers currently advancing their studies. Demonstrating MTN’s commitment to inclusivity, the beneficiaries include 33 differently abled students, alongside a balanced representation of 187 female and 313 male awardees.

Speaking with pride about the scholarship’s impact, Dr. Mate described it as a life-changing initiative designed not only to reward excellence but to break down systemic barriers to education. He stressed that education is central to bridging Ghana’s poverty gap and that MTN remains steadfast in its mission to create opportunities for young people to thrive and lead in their communities.

The ceremony was also graced by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who commended MTN for its leadership in corporate social responsibility and its commitment to correcting educational and socio-economic inequalities. He expressed satisfaction with the inclusion of differently abled persons among the beneficiaries and celebrated the success of the Ashanti Region, which produced 38 of this year’s scholarship recipients. Dr. Amoakohene noted that MTN’s initiative is a shining example of how the private sector can partner with the government to address critical developmental challenges.

A heartwarming moment of the ceremony came when several beneficiaries and their families openly expressed their heartfelt gratitude to MTN Ghana for its unwavering support. Many shared emotional stories of how the scholarship has lifted a heavy financial burden, allowing them to focus on their studies and chase their dreams without fear of dropping out. Their appreciation underscored the far-reaching impact of the Bright Scholarship, which is transforming lives and inspiring hope in communities across the country.

Over the years, the Bright Scholarship Awards have grown beyond a corporate social responsibility project, becoming a beacon of hope for ambitious yet underprivileged students across Ghana. The program’s impact extends far beyond financial relief, empowering beneficiaries to pursue academic excellence and inspiring communities to believe in the power of education. With its bold plan to support more students and teachers in the coming years, MTN Ghana is setting a new standard for investment in human capital, driving innovation, and shaping a brighter future for the nation.

As this year’s awardees stepped forward to receive their scholarships, the sense of hope and determination in the room was unmistakable. The Bright Scholarship, for them, is more than financial aid—it is a lifeline, a stepping stone to greatness, and a testament to MTN Ghana’s belief that investing in people is the surest way to transform a nation.
