Empowering Ghana’s Future: MTN Bright Scholarship Reaches New Milestones

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its position as a leader in corporate social responsibility and a champion of education by awarding full scholarships to 500 students and teachers for the 2025/2026 academic year through its flagship Bright Scholarship Awards. This year’s ceremony, held on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Faculty of Law Auditorium of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, marked yet another milestone in MTN’s mission to transform lives and empower communities through education.

Since its relaunch in 2018, the Bright Scholarship initiative has supported 720 students nationwide, covering tuition, accommodation, and stipends. The program has become a lifeline for thousands of young Ghanaians who face financial barriers to higher education. Over the years, it has produced outstanding success stories, including valedictorians, top graduating students, and hundreds of First Class Honours graduates, proving that access to education is a powerful equalizer.

Speaking at the event, MTN Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Dr. Isaac Mate, General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value, reaffirmed MTN’s commitment to expanding the program’s reach. He announced that over the next three years, MTN will scale the Bright Scholarship to cover 1,500 beneficiaries, with a focus on students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), vocational and technical education, as well as teachers upgrading their professional skills. Dr. Mate emphasized that this is not just a scholarship scheme but a deliberate investment in human capital, designed to break cycles of poverty and strengthen Ghana’s future workforce.

The 2025 edition of the Bright Scholarship was highly competitive, drawing 3,691 applications from across the country. From this pool, 1,200 candidates were shortlisted for interviews, and 500 exceptional students and teachers from 42 public institutions were selected. This year’s group consists of 300 students pursuing undergraduate degrees in STEM, vocational, and technical programs, alongside 200 teachers currently furthering their studies. In line with MTN’s vision of inclusivity, the selection featured 33 differently abled students, with a gender breakdown of 187 female and 313 male beneficiaries.

Dr. Mate expressed pride in the transformative power of the scholarship, describing it as a beacon of opportunity for those with dreams but limited resources. He stressed that education is the single most effective way to bridge socio-economic inequalities, noting that MTN’s commitment to education is part of its broader mission to empower communities and create sustainable impact.

The ceremony was graced by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who praised MTN Ghana for using its resources to address inequalities in education. He commended the company for its inclusion of differently abled persons and noted that 38 of this year’s awardees are from the Ashanti Region. Dr. Amoakohene hailed MTN’s Bright Scholarship as a model of effective partnership between the private sector and government, saying it is not only providing access to higher education but also addressing structural inequalities that have long hindered Ghana’s development.

An emotional highlight of the event was the outpouring of gratitude from beneficiaries and their families. Many shared heartfelt testimonies of how the scholarship has relieved them of financial burdens, allowing them to focus on their studies and pursue their ambitions with confidence. Their appreciation reflected the far-reaching impact of MTN’s commitment, showing how a single corporate initiative can change lives, strengthen communities, and inspire hope across the country.

Since its inception, the Bright Scholarship Awards have evolved beyond financial aid, becoming a movement of empowerment and a symbol of MTN’s dedication to national development. The company’s bold vision to expand the program to benefit 1,500 more students and teachers over the next three years underscores its belief in the transformative power of education.

As the 500 beneficiaries of this year’s edition stepped forward to receive their awards, the sense of hope and optimism was palpable. For them, this scholarship is more than just financial support; it is a lifeline and a stepping stone to a brighter future. MTN Ghana’s continued investment in education is not only shaping individual destinies but also laying a strong foundation for Ghana’s development, proving that empowering one student at a time can transform an entire nation.
