PURC Executive Secretary Collaborates with ECG to Address Utility Challenges in Ashanti Region

Dr. Shafic Suleman, the newly appointed Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has pledged to enhance utility services in the Ashanti Region through a strategic partnership with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). During a crucial meeting held at ECG’s Boadi office in Kumasi, Dr. Suleman and senior PURC executives engaged with ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission management to address key issues affecting electricity distribution in the region.

Dr. Suleman stressed the importance of improving service delivery by prioritizing efficiency, transparency, and quick responses to customer concerns. He emphasized that the focus should be on strengthening communication channels between ECG and its consumers to build trust and ensure swift resolution of complaints. He further noted that ongoing improvements in service standards are essential for maintaining the confidence of the public.

In a bid to foster ongoing collaboration, Dr. Suleman introduced the Utility Stakeholders Platform, a new initiative aimed at bringing together representatives from both the electricity and water sectors within the Ashanti Region. This platform will serve as a space for constructive dialogue to address operational challenges and develop innovative solutions for more effective utility management in the region.

The meeting also provided a platform for Ing. Peter Fletcher, General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, to highlight some of the operational constraints facing ECG. He pointed to Right of Way issues as one of the key obstacles delaying critical sub-transmission projects, which has affected the company’s ability to expand infrastructure and improve electricity distribution across the region.

Dr. Suleman was joined by key PURC officials, including Alhaji Jabaru Abukari, Director of Regional Operations and Consumer Services; Dr. Eric Obutey, Director of Research and Corporate Affairs; Dr. Robert Aziz Tia, Head of Corporate Affairs; and Mr. Leon Acquaye, Deputy Director responsible for Southern Operations. Their presence underscored the PURC’s commitment to addressing the utility challenges facing the Ashanti Region through cooperative action and regulatory oversight.

This collaboration between PURC and ECG is a significant step towards achieving efficient, reliable, and sustainable utility services for the people of Ashanti. By creating opportunities for dialogue, sharing insights, and identifying practical solutions, both organizations aim to improve the overall utility experience for residents in the region, ensuring that high-quality services are accessible to all.
