The President, H.E. Akufo-Addo, as part of his four day tour of the Ashanti Region, has inspected ongoing work at the Kumasi Airport Expansion Project.
The project which is being executed by Messrs Contracta Construction Limited, is in line with the government’s agenda to expand the aviation industry to accelerate socio-economic development.
Some ongoing works include extension of the runway to accommodate Boeing 737-800 series aircraft, construction of new arrival hall and additional aprons.
Two new fire stations, control towers and two new boarding bridges are also under construction.
Upon completion, the new terminal would have the capacity to handle one million passengers per annum.
According to the project implementors, the expansion project at the Kumasi International Airport involved two phases. A $29m rehabilitasation project was carried out under phase one by December 2014. Also, aeronautical ground lighting systems were installed and the existing runway was rehabilitated under the project.
Ground-breaking for the €66.35m ($75.23m) second phase of the expansion project was held in November 2018.
