MTN Ghana has once again demonstrated its commitment to youth empowerment, financial literacy, and digital education by sensitising over 1,500 students on safe Mobile Money use, fraud prevention, and responsible data management during the 2026 Success Africa Summit at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Great Hall.
The 20th edition of the summit, themed “Beyond Vision: Dare, Act & Achieve,” brought together students from second-cycle and tertiary institutions across Ghana, alongside policymakers, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, offering a platform to inspire, mentor, and guide young people on leadership, innovation, and practical digital skills.

During the summit, Nana Addai, Mobile Money Manager for Northern Ghana at MTN Ghana, took the stage to educate students on the evolution of Mobile Money (MoMo), the risks of digital fraud, and best practices for protecting financial accounts.

He noted that Mobile Money, which celebrates its 17th anniversary this year, has transformed from a simple platform for deposits, withdrawals, and transfers into a comprehensive financial service ecosystem that includes savings, investment products, and advanced transaction features.
Highlighting products such as Yellow Save, he explained that students and other users can now save money while earning interest ranging from 5% to 10%, offering a secure alternative to traditional informal savings systems such as susu. “Unlike susu, where you pay someone to hold your money, Mobile Money allows you to save and earn interest while keeping full control of your funds,” Nana Addai said.

The MTN official then turned his attention to the pressing issue of digital fraud. He stressed that most Mobile Money fraud does not happen through hacking but through social engineering, where fraudsters manipulate users into authorizing transactions themselves.
“Fraudsters need your cooperation to steal money. If you do not approve a transaction, the money cannot leave your account,” he explained, adding that criminals often impersonate friends or family on WhatsApp or social media, claiming emergencies and requesting urgent financial assistance.

In delivering what many described as the summit’s most practical advice, Nana Addai said, “Never share your Mobile Money PIN with anyone, not even your partner.” He emphasized that the PIN is the most critical safeguard for users’ accounts and that revealing it compromises the security of their finances.
He further advised students to enable two-step verification on messaging apps like WhatsApp, verify all requests for money from contacts, and avoid responding to suspicious calls, messages, or links requesting financial information.

Nana Addai also outlined MTN Ghana’s proactive measures to protect customers from fraud, including the ability to block not only phone numbers but also devices used in fraudulent activities. He noted that the company works closely with law enforcement agencies to track and prosecute fraudsters and regularly conducts public education campaigns to sensitize users about security threats.

To ensure students could manage their finances efficiently, Nana Addai encouraged them to download the MoMo App, which provides access to detailed transaction histories, advanced savings management, and convenient financial services, all while using only about 300MB of data.

Following Nana Addai, Dzudzorfe Hadzor, Coordinator for Data Devices and Home at MTN Ghana, spoke to students about responsible mobile data usage. She explained that high data consumption is often due to automatic app downloads and background updates, particularly from social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
She guided students on adjusting app settings to control background data usage and introduced various affordable MTN bundle options, including large bundles for long-term use, midnight bundles for research and downloads, and app-specific social media bundles to reduce costs.

The session concluded with interactive engagement, as students asked questions and expressed appreciation for MTN’s guidance. Many highlighted that the practical advice would help them avoid fraud, manage their finances responsibly, and use data more efficiently.

The 2026 Success Africa Summit, now in its 20th edition, continues to serve as a platform for mentoring and inspiring young Africans, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital age safely and effectively. With MTN Ghana’s continued support, the summit is expected to expand to other regions in the coming weeks, reaching thousands more students across the country.
