NADMO WARNS PUBLIC TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FLOODS AHEAD OF RAINY SEASON

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a strong caution to the public to take necessary precautions to prevent flooding as the country approaches the peak of the rainy season.

The Ga East Municipal Director of NADMO, Mr. Seth Kofi Osei Kissi, made this call during a press briefing today after a sensitization exercise in selected schools within the Municipality. He cited indiscriminate waste disposal, choked gutters, and poor drainage systems as major contributing factors to floods in urban areas.

He urged the public to adopt responsible waste management practices, emphasizing that improper disposal of plastic waste and other materials often leads to clogged drains, which obstruct the free flow of rainwater and result in severe flooding.

PREVENTION MEASURES IN PLACE

According to Mr. Osei Kissi, NADMO has implemented several measures to mitigate flood risks in the municipality. These include intensified community sensitization efforts, particularly targeting residents along riverbanks, and educating students on flood management practices.

He further disclosed that the organisation is collaborating with the Ghana Meteorological Agency to provide timely weather updates to residents, enabling them to prepare adequately for potential heavy rains.

FOCUS ON PREVENTION RATHER THAN RELIEF

While reaffirming NADMO’s commitment to providing relief support in times of disaster, Mr. Osei Kissi stressed that the organisation’s primary focus remains on disaster prevention.

“We are well-equipped to assist affected persons when the need arises, but our priority is to ensure that disasters are prevented before they occur. That is why we are urging everyone to be proactive in keeping their surroundings clean and adhering to safety guidelines,” he stated.

He called on stakeholders, including municipal authorities, traditional leaders, and the general public, to support NADMO’s efforts in preventing floods by maintaining clean environments and avoiding activities that block water channels.
