MTN Ghana has joined the rest of the country in mourning the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two prominent government ministers and six others. The leading telecommunications company described the event as a devastating national tragedy that calls for unity, compassion, and responsible communication, especially on digital platforms.

The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. Among the victims were the Honourable Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Honourable Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, alongside six other individuals. The news has left the entire country in grief, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, institutions, and ordinary citizens.

In an official statement issued from its headquarters in Accra, MTN Ghana said it received the news with deep sadness and shock. The company extended its heartfelt condolences to the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the people of Ghana.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to His Excellency the President of the Republic, the Government and the people of Ghana, and to the families, friends and colleagues of all those affected by this tragic incident,” the statement read.
Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr. Stephen Blewett, also conveyed his sympathies and called for national solidarity during this moment of collective grief. He emphasized the need for Ghanaians to approach mourning with dignity and to be mindful of the impact of social media content during such sensitive periods.

“We appeal to all to honour the memories of the departed with dignity and to use their social media platforms to promote messages of hope, solidarity, and compassion,” Mr. Blewett said.
MTN Ghana further urged the public to refrain from sharing distressing images, videos, or unverified information related to the crash. According to the company, such actions risk intensifying the emotional trauma of bereaved families and the entire nation.

The telecommunications provider, which operates under Scancom PLC and maintains a leadership position in Ghana’s telecom industry, reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the country in times of tragedy. The company also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
“May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
