MTN Ghana Pays Tribute to Fallen Government Officials in Helicopter Crash

MTN Ghana has paid solemn tribute to the eight individuals, including two senior government ministers, who lost their lives in a tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. The telecommunications giant described the incident as a heartbreaking moment for the nation and called on all Ghanaians to mourn with dignity, compassion, and responsible communication.

The crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of the Honourable Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; the Honourable Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; and six others, including military officers and crew. The tragedy has since cast a dark cloud over the country, sparking waves of grief and national mourning.

In a statement issued in Accra, MTN Ghana expressed its deepest condolences to the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the entire nation. The company also extended sympathies to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to His Excellency the President of the Republic, the Government and the people of Ghana, and to the families, friends and colleagues of all those affected by this tragic incident,” the statement said.

Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr. Stephen Blewett, described the incident as a painful loss for the country and urged citizens to uphold national unity during this difficult time. He also encouraged Ghanaians to use their digital platforms to share messages of hope, solidarity, and empathy rather than harmful or sensational content. “We appeal to all to honour the memories of the departed with dignity and to use their social media platforms to promote messages of hope, solidarity, and compassion,” Mr. Blewett urged.

MTN Ghana also cautioned against the circulation of distressing images and unverified information relating to the crash, noting that such actions only worsen the pain of bereaved families and undermine the collective healing process.

The company, operated by Scancom PLC, reaffirmed its support for the Government and people of Ghana during this moment of national sorrow. It offered prayers for the souls of the departed and strength for the families and institutions affected. “May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
