The Minority Members of Parliament have donated GH¢20,000 to support traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Adum Bluelight Market in Kumasi. The donation is part of efforts to provide immediate relief to over 2,000 traders whose stalls and goods were destroyed in the devastating blaze.
Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs visited the scene of the disaster on Thursday, April 4, 2025, to assess the extent of the damage and interact with victims. The fire, which occurred on April 2, razed hundreds of stalls and caused millions of cedis in losses.
Addressing the media during the visit, Afenyo-Markin called on the government to release funds from the Contingency Fund to support the full reconstruction of the market and restore the livelihoods of the affected traders. “We, the Minority MPs, are calling on the government to fund the rebuilding of the market for the traders,” he stated. “We’ve seen how the government has previously supported other communities affected by disasters. The same level of urgency is needed here.”
The Minority Leader stressed that the Adum Bluelight Market plays a crucial role in the economic life of Kumasi and must be restored quickly to prevent long-term hardship for the victims and their families.
Traders welcomed the MPs warmly and expressed gratitude for the donation and the visit. They also appealed to the government and city authorities for swift intervention to rebuild the market and provide temporary structures to resume their businesses. “We thank the Minority MPs for coming to our aid,” said one of the trader leaders. “But what we really need now is support to rebuild our stalls and get back to work. We’ve lost everything.”
The Minority caucus pledged to continue engaging the government and other relevant institutions to ensure the concerns of the victims are addressed and sustainable support is provided.
As the affected traders begin to recover from the shock, many are hopeful that this show of solidarity will spark quick and decisive action from national and local authorities.
