The Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA), the preeminent organisation representing over 700,000 cocoa farmers across the country, has expressed strong disagreement with the government of Ghana over the recent increment in producer prices for the 2025/2026 cocoa season.

According to the association, the welfare and motivation of farmers to increase production can only be secured if the government makes an initial price increase of 70 percent. They further recommend the adoption of a more resilient pricing mechanism that accounts for potential currency exchange rate changes.

GNACOFA is also urging the inclusion of a clause in the pricing structure to allow for adjustments in producer prices in response to significant future currency movements. This, they said, would ensure that farmers’ interests are properly safeguarded against economic instability.

The association further called on the government to ensure fairness and stability for cocoa farmers by mitigating potential losses that may result from currency fluctuations.

They are also demanding that farmers be directly involved in decision-making processes aimed at promoting Ghana’s cocoa sector, stressing that inclusive governance will strengthen the industry.

GNACOFA is therefore calling on the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to implement these suggestions without delay to respect and strengthen farmers’ rights and avert a potential humanitarian crisis in cocoa-growing communities.
