A 75-year-old educationist and passionate communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Wallas Ababio, has confidently asserted his readiness to serve as the District Chief Executive (DCE ) of Sekyere South despite his age. Mr. Ababio, who is among the 11 applicants vying for the DCE position, believes his experience and dedication make him just as capable of leading the municipality as others, regardless of his advanced age.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Ababio, affectionately known as “Uncle Wallas,” drew a comparison between his potential leadership and that of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who led Ghana successfully into his 80s. Mr. Ababio argued that if Akufo-Addo was trusted with the responsibility of managing an entire nation at the age of 73, he, at 75, is more than qualified to lead a district.
“I may be advanced in age, but I am still young at heart. When the elderly are called, I show up with my age; when young men are called, I show up with my size. I’m an ‘Akokokra-abrantie,’ as people say it, and I can equally manage my municipality at 75, just as President Akufo-Addo managed the entire country in his 80s,” he stated with conviction.
Mr. Ababio, who has a long and distinguished career in education, emphasized that one of his top priorities as DCE would be to improve education in Sekyere South. He plans to enhance the quality of education at the basic and elementary levels, which he claims have suffered in recent years. He also vowed to address the infrastructural challenges facing Senior High Schools and ensure the welfare of teachers, a cause that is particularly close to his heart.
“I will focus on improving education, from the basic level to Senior High Schools. Education is key to our future, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that both students and teachers have the resources and support they need,” Mr. Ababio said.
Additionally, Mr. Ababio stressed his commitment to promoting investment in both the private and public sectors, aiming to create sustainable jobs for the youth of the District . He also expressed a strong interest in fostering entrepreneurship, ensuring that young people have the opportunity to start their own businesses and secure financial independence.
His dedication to the NDC is equally unwavering. Mr. Ababio’s loyalty to the party dates back to his days as a civil servant, when he maintained a cautious political stance to avoid victimization. After retiring as the Head of Finance and Administration at the Kumasi Metro Education Office in 2010, he became an active communicator for the NDC in the Ashanti Region, a role he has held since 2011. He later served as the Regional Administrator for the NDC party from 2016 to 2020.
“I have worked tirelessly for the party, and it is now time for me to serve my constituents as the DCE for Sekyere South. The promises made to me regarding this position in 2016, 2020, and 2024 should now be honored,” he said. “This is payback time for all the hard work I have put in for the NDC.”
As the NDC continues to assess its candidates for the Sekyere South DCE position, Mr. Ababio remains hopeful that his extensive experience, dedication to the party, and vision for the municipality will make him the ideal candidate to lead Sekyere South into a brighter future.
