A fierce rainstorm has ripped –up the roofs of four-unit classroom where more than 80 children would be adversely affected when school reopens on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Aburaso Methodist Primary A, a community in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of Ashanti Region.
The rainstorm that occurred on the midnight of Sunday, April 28, 2024 lasted for about forty-five minutes but caused severe havoc to the school building.
A visit by the DAILY GUIDE to the scene saw pieces of worn-out aluminum roofing sheets scattered all over the school’s compound while some were also seen on the roof of another newly constructed storey building nearby.
The destruction of the school by the rainstorm is not a surprise to the residents since the said building has seen no renovation since it was constructed over 60 years ago.
The whole structure is in the deplorable state that if it is not pull down completely but re-roofed and allow the pupils to study in, disaster may befall in the near future.
The Assembly Member for Atwima Aburaso and Edwaase Electoral Area appealed to the Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and other well-meaning individuals to immediately come to the aid of the school in getting the situation under control.
“This particular building has never been renovated for over 60 years. These antediluvian roofing sheets scattered here have not been changed since they were roofed and see how the building is in bad state and so I am using your medium to appeal to old students of the school to come to our aid in this crucial time,” she lamented.
Madam Mercy Ofosu also called on the relevant institutions and well-meaning indigenes of the community and its environs to pull resources together to help address the challenge to safeguard the education and the future of the young ones.
Meanwhile a local church around the school has agreed to allow the pupils to use their edifice temporary for academic work during school hours.
This was disclosed by the Assembly Member and added that other pupils may be forced to study under trees if there was no immediate action to support the children.
In her succinct remarks, the Unit Committee chairperson, Madam Rita Tieku said she was expectant of the incident since the fragile roofs of the school could not endure the magnitude of the storm.
The school building she noted has not seen any major face-lift since its construction.
Meanwhile, some traders of the community, where the school is situated also had fair share of the rainstorm as it uprooted the kiosks and other properties.
