The Minister for Education, Honorable Haruna Iddrisu, has officially inaugurated a 13-member Governing Council for the University of Cape Coast (UCC) at a colorful ceremony held at the Ministry of Education in Accra.

The newly constituted Governing Council is chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice, William Anaam Atuguba, renowned for his distinguished service to Ghana’s judiciary. The Council is tasked with overseeing the strategic direction, policies, and governance of the University, ensuring it maintains its stature as a leading institution for higher education and research in Ghana and beyond.

In his keynote address, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the critical role university councils play in shaping the future of education in the country. He charged the new members to uphold high standards of accountability, innovation, and academic excellence.

“Universities are the bedrock of national development. I trust this Council will work collaboratively to ensure the University of Cape Coast continues to produce graduates who are globally competitive and locally relevant,” the Minister stated.

The newly inaugurated Council includes distinguished individuals drawn from academia, government, and the private sector. Among the government nominees are Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Vice-Chancellor of UCC; Dr. Abdul Nasser Alidu, a respected academic; and Ms. Shika Acolatse, an accomplished professional in the corporate sector.

He called for unity, innovation, and inclusiveness in governance to meet the evolving needs of the university community.

The 13-member body is expected to focus on policy formulation, financial oversight, and ensuring that UCC remains responsive to national and global educational trends. They are also charged with enhancing the University’s research output, student welfare, and infrastructural development.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education, representatives from academia, and key stakeholders in the education sector. The event was marked by a strong spirit of collaboration and a shared vision for the future of tertiary education in Ghana.
