Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum Honored as NUGS Minister of the Year

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has named the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, as the Minister of the Year 2024. The announcement was made at a high-profile ceremony in Accra, where the Minister was recognized for his exceptional leadership and groundbreaking contributions to Ghana’s education sector.

Dr. Adutwum has been instrumental in implementing policies that have significantly transformed the educational landscape in Ghana, making it a model for other African nations. His passion for education, particularly in promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), was a key factor in earning him this accolade.

Recognition and Tribute

During the event, Dr. Adutwum was presented with a plaque and a citation honoring his dedication and transformative leadership. The citation praised his efforts to redefine the education system, enhance accessibility, and inspire innovation.

The citation read:

> “Your visionary initiatives and unrelenting commitment have redefined the education landscape in Ghana, fostering access, quality, and innovation. Popularly celebrated as ‘Dr. STEM,’ your passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics has propelled groundbreaking achievements, inspiring students and stakeholders alike to embrace a future driven by knowledge and creativity.”

It also acknowledged his collaborative spirit and strong working relationships with students and stakeholders, which have created a supportive environment prioritizing the needs of Ghanaian learners.

Impact and Justification

The outgoing NUGS President, Mr. Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel, stated that Dr. Adutwum’s recognition is well-deserved, given his tireless efforts to elevate the standard of education in Ghana. He expressed optimism that the award would inspire others to work towards national development.

“NUGS is committed to supporting the Education Ministry and other stakeholders to ensure the continuous growth and improvement of Ghana’s education sector,” Mr. Kyeremeh added.

Minister’s Remarks

In response, Dr. Adutwum thanked NUGS for recognizing his contributions to education. He noted that his achievements were the result of a collective effort by the Ministry, educators, and other stakeholders.

“This award reflects the hard work of everyone involved in advancing education in Ghana. Our policies are aimed at equipping Ghanaian students with critical skills to make them globally competitive,” he remarked.

Dr. Adutwum, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, urged Ghanaians to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections to ensure the continuation of transformational policies in education and other sectors.

Other Awardees

The ceremony also celebrated other contributors to education, including:

Mr. Robin Todd, Executive Director of Transforming Teaching, Education, and Learning (T-TEL), who received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Mr. Nuhu Mahama, CEO of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).

Nana Afra Sika Mensah, Deputy National Coordinator of the Free Senior High School Secretariat.

Scholarship Initiative

As part of the event, NUGS awarded scholarships worth GH₵1,000 each to 254 students. These scholarships, launched last year, aim to support brilliant but needy students, particularly those with disabilities or from less privileged backgrounds.

This year, over 1,200 students applied, but after a thorough selection process, only 254 were chosen. The initiative is part of NUGS’ efforts to make education accessible to all.

A Bright Future for Education

Dr. Adutwum’s recognition as Minister of the Year underscores the significant strides Ghana is making in education under his leadership. The award not only highlights his achievements but also sets a high standard for future leaders in the sector.
