The Ashanti Regional Executives of the National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG) have issued a stern warning to their members against arbitrarily increasing transport fares without official approval from the union’s leadership.
According to the Regional Executives, it has come to their attention that some tricycle (popularly known as “Pragia”) stations within Greater Kumasi, particularly the Dr. Mensah Tricycle Station and the Suame Roundabout to Tafo route, among others, have independently raised their fares without following the laid-down procedures.
Addressing the media, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of NUTOG, Mr. Seidu Mubarak, expressed concern over the unilateral fare hikes by some riders and operators. He emphasized that only the National Executive Council of NUTOG holds the mandate to deliberate on and approve any adjustments to tricycle transport fares across the country.
“We are hereby advising all tricycle riders and operators in the Ashanti Region and Greater Kumasi to strictly maintain the current approved transport fares. No individual or group has the authority to introduce new fares without clearance from the National Executives,” Mr. Mubarak stated.
He further warned that any operator found guilty of implementing unauthorized fare increases would face disciplinary actions in accordance with the union’s regulations.
Mr. Mubarak also appealed to the general public, urging commuters to resist paying any unauthorized fare increments. He assured the public that NUTOG is committed to protecting both the interests of the tricycle operators and the commuting public by ensuring fairness and transparency in fare adjustments.
“We encourage passengers to report any operator charging unapproved fares to the union’s leadership for immediate action,” he added.
