The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has reinforced its commitment to the fight against illegal mining with the commissioning and deployment of the first batch of Blue Water Guards in the Ashanti Region, aimed at protecting rivers and other vital water bodies from the destructive activities of galamsey operators.

Speaking after receiving the leadership of the First Batch (Ashanti) of the Blue Water Guards, the Regional Minister described the initiative as a major step towards safeguarding the region’s natural resources, particularly its rivers, streams and critical water sources that continue to face severe threats from illegal mining.

According to him, the Blue Water Guards will work closely with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and relevant local authorities to ensure effective monitoring, enforcement and protection of water bodies across the region. He noted that the collaboration is expected to strengthen on-the-ground operations and enhance rapid response to illegal mining activities.

The Regional Minister reaffirmed that the ARCC remains fully committed to the national fight against galamsey, stressing that special attention will continue to be given to forests, water bodies and illegal mining activities along major roads within the region. He emphasized that sustained enforcement, strong inter-agency collaboration and active community engagement remain key pillars of the region’s strategy to achieve lasting results.

He expressed profound gratitude to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership and vision in prioritising environmental protection and the fight against illegal mining. He also commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for his continuous support and commitment to the Ashanti Region in addressing the galamsey menace.

The Regional Minister called on communities, traditional authorities and the general public to support the work of the Blue Water Guards, noting that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility.

He concluded by reaffirming the region’s resolve to protect its environment and preserve water resources for present and future generations, stating that together, stakeholders will secure water for life and ensure sustainable development for the Ashanti Region.
