Dr Frank Amoakohene Commissions Blue Water Guards to Safeguard Rivers in Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has commissioned and deployed the first batch of Blue Water Guards in the Ashanti Region as part of renewed efforts to combat illegal mining and protect the region’s rivers, streams and other critical water bodies from environmental destruction.

The commissioning marks a significant milestone in the national fight against galamsey, particularly in the Ashanti Region where illegal mining has posed serious threats to water quality, forest reserves and livelihoods. Dr Amoakohene described the initiative as a timely and strategic intervention aimed at restoring and preserving the region’s natural resources for present and future generations.
Speaking after receiving the leadership of the First Batch (Ashanti) of the Blue Water Guards, the Regional Minister explained that the guards will work closely with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), security agencies and local authorities to ensure effective surveillance, enforcement and protection of water bodies across the region. He stressed that coordinated operations and intelligence sharing would be key to achieving sustainable results.

Dr Amoakohene reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) to the fight against galamsey, noting that enforcement efforts will be intensified in forests, along river bodies and on major roads where illegal mining-related activities are prevalent. According to him, the ARCC will continue to strengthen inter-agency collaboration while deepening community engagement to discourage local participation in illegal mining.
He expressed deep appreciation to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership and strong political will in prioritising environmental protection and the safeguarding of Ghana’s water resources. The Regional Minister also commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for his continuous support and commitment to strengthening anti-galamsey operations in the Ashanti Region.
Dr Amoakohene called on traditional leaders, opinion leaders and residents to cooperate fully with the Blue Water Guards and support government efforts to end illegal mining. He emphasised that protecting water bodies and the environment is a shared responsibility that requires the active involvement of all stakeholders.

He concluded by reiterating the region’s determination to protect its environment and secure clean water for life, stressing that sustained enforcement, collaboration and public support will be crucial in winning the fight against galamsey and ensuring sustainable development across the Ashanti Region.
