AI, Coding and Innovation Tipped to Power Next Era of Telecom Growth — MTN Ghana CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has projected that the next phase of growth within the telecommunications industry will be driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), coding, and technology-led innovation rather than traditional connectivity services.
Speaking in a radio interview in Accra, Mr. Blewett explained that while telecom networks provide the essential backbone for communication and economic activity, the future of the sector lies in the creation of intelligent digital platforms and solutions that ride on those networks. He noted that global technology giants today exist because of the reliability of telecom infrastructure, stressing that Ghana’s next wave of digital transformation will depend on the same foundation.
“The real growth in telecoms won’t just come from providing connectivity. It will come from the platforms, solutions and innovations built on top of those networks,” he said. “Think about it—Facebook, WhatsApp and Uber, none of these would exist without the network. That’s where the future lies.”
Mr. Blewett further underscored that AI and coding are no longer industry buzzwords but the engines driving modern innovation. He said these technologies will continue to shape product development, customer experience, and business efficiency across the telecom sector, positioning telecommunications as a key pillar of Ghana’s digital economy.
According to him, the telecom industry will remain central to national development because it enables every other sector—finance, agriculture, healthcare, education and commerce—to innovate and scale through digital solutions. “The telecom sector will remain central to economic and social transformation because we provide the backbone that allows all other sectors to innovate and thrive,” he added.
He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to the company’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which prioritizes digital platforms, fintech expansion, and inclusive growth. Mr. Blewett emphasized that MTN’s vision extends beyond profitability to long-term national impact.
“At MTN, we’re not just chasing profits, we are chasing impact. Our goal is to create opportunities, to enable young people, businesses, and communities to thrive in a digital economy,” he noted.
The MTN Ghana CEO expressed confidence that with the right investments in digital skills, innovation, and technology platforms, Ghana is well positioned to harness the transformative potential of AI and become a competitive force in Africa’s digital future.
