As Kumasi prepares to host the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has heightened sanitation activities across the city to ensure a clean and dignified atmosphere befitting the historic occasion. The royal funeral, known as the Dote Yie, is scheduled to take place from September 14 to 18, 2025, and is expected to attract mourners, dignitaries, and traditional leaders from across Ghana and beyond.

Leading the citywide cleanup exercise was the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, who was joined by heads of departments from the Assembly, staff, students from Serwaa Nyarko Girls’ Senior High School and Asanteman Senior High School, as well as community volunteers. The exercise began at the Airport Roundabout, stretched through Dr. Mensah and Adehyeman, and ended at Asanteman SHS, where the Mayor took time to engage with students and staff.

In an address to the students, Hon. Ofori Agyeman Boadi spoke about the values that shaped his own educational journey, stressing the importance of discipline, hard work, and respect for teachers. He encouraged them to remain focused on their studies, assuring them that diligence and perseverance would yield lasting success. The Mayor expressed his appreciation to the students for joining the cleanup and further assured them of the Assembly’s continuous support, outlining developmental plans that would benefit Asanteman SHS in the near future.

The Assistant Head Domestic of Asanteman SHS, who received the Mayor and his delegation, thanked him for leading the exercise and for inspiring the students with his personal story. She commended the Mayor’s commitment to education and sanitation, describing his visit as a timely motivation for the school community.

Speaking to journalists after the cleanup, the Mayor emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean city as Kumasi prepares to host thousands of visitors for the Dote Yie. He explained that beyond honoring the memory of the late Asantehemaa, a clean environment also reflects the discipline and pride of the people of Kumasi. He added that sanitation is not just a ceremonial duty but a responsibility that must be upheld by all residents, traders, and institutions on a daily basis.

The KMA’s intensified cleanup campaign will continue in the days leading to the funeral, covering major roads, markets, schools, and communities across the metropolis. With the eyes of the nation set on Kumasi during this historic event, the Mayor reaffirmed the Assembly’s determination to ensure the city presents itself in the best possible light as Asanteman bids farewell to its beloved Queen Mother.
