The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Isshaq Ibrahim, has once again demonstrated his strong resolve in the fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, by leading a joint security taskforce to clamp down on illegal mining operations along the Agogoso and Offin Rivers near Nyinahin.

The  operation, which was swift and decisive, resulted in the arrest of eight suspected illegal miners who had pitched camp along the river banks. The taskforce, made up of security personnel and local authorities, stormed the galamsey sites and destroyed 15 changfan machines, while over 150 makeshift tents used by the miners were also dismantled and burnt. In addition, more than 100 pumping machines and 15 metal detectors used in the illegal operations were confiscated. One executor, believed to be a key player in the illegal activities, was also picked up during the swoop.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, Hon. Isshaq Ibrahim explained that the crackdown was not only about enforcing the law but also about protecting vital natural resources that sustain thousands of lives in the district and beyond.

“The move was aimed at protecting the sanctity of the rivers that supply water to countless people across Atwima Mponua. We cannot sit unconcerned while galamsey operators destroy our natural resources,” he emphasized.

The DCE, who has been vocal about his determination to stop the menace, issued a stern warning to persons still engaging in illegal mining despite government’s ban. He cautioned that the Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies, would not relent but rather intensify operations until galamsey is rooted out completely from the district.

Hon. Isshaq also appealed to residents to see the fight against galamsey as a collective duty and not just the responsibility of government. He urged them to provide timely information to authorities to help flush out the perpetrators.

“Galamsey destroys not only our rivers but also our farmlands, forests, and livelihoods. I am urging all residents to join hands with us in this fight to protect our district,” he added.

The Atwima Mponua District is one of the hardest-hit areas by illegal mining in the Ashanti Region. Many of its rivers and forest reserves have come under serious threat, raising concerns among traditional authorities, environmentalists, and government officials.

The latest operation forms part of the government’s renewed nationwide campaign against illegal mining, which continues to pose a major threat to Ghana’s water bodies, agriculture, and sustainable development.
