The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has taken decisive disciplinary action against the headteacher and several staff members of Buokrom Estate M/A Basic School for allegedly charging and collecting unapproved fees from pupils.

This move follows the emergence of a viral TikTok video that drew public attention to the situation, prompting immediate scrutiny by local authorities.

According to a statement released by the KMA, preliminary investigations confirmed that the school staff had indeed levied and collected fees not sanctioned by the Ghana Education Service (GES). In response, the Assembly has directed the immediate transfer of the headteacher and other involved staff members pending the outcome of a full-scale investigation.

A disciplinary committee has been established to probe the matter thoroughly. The committee is scheduled to convene on August 15, 2025, to hear testimonies from the affected teachers and gather evidence.

Speaking to Citi News, KMA’s Public Relations Officer, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to upholding transparency, discipline, and adherence to GES guidelines. “Based on evidence and the GES code of conduct, a disciplinary committee has been established so that it can take the necessary precautions and get to know what actually transpired. They will sit on the 15th of August 2025 to be able to hear the teachers and the headteacher,” Aboagye stated.

She added that the Mayor of Kumasi has directed the staff transfers to ensure neutrality and prevent interference with the upcoming inquiry.

The incident has sparked significant concern among parents and education stakeholders in the Ashanti Region, many of whom have called for stricter monitoring of public basic schools to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The KMA has reassured the public that it remains committed to enforcing the GES code of conduct and ensuring that no student is subjected to unauthorized financial demands in public schools.

The outcome of the committee’s investigation will determine whether further disciplinary measures, including dismissal or prosecution, will be pursued.
