ECG Launches Emergency Response to Restore Stable Power in Obuasi

In a swift and proactive move to address recent power supply disruptions in Obuasi and its adjoining communities, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched a comprehensive emergency response initiative aimed at restoring stability and reliability to the area’s electricity distribution network.

On July 7, ECG convened an emergency technical meeting that brought together key personnel from the Ashanti Sub-Transmission and Ashanti South Regional teams. The meeting was held in response to growing concerns from residents, businesses, and institutions over the persistent power outages affecting daily life and economic activities in the Obuasi enclave.

This high-level gathering followed a broader sector-wide consultation spearheaded by the Minister for Energy, and attended by top executives from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), ECG, AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), and their respective technical directors and managers. The focus of these engagements is to execute immediate stabilisation measures while advancing long-term infrastructure solutions to ensure dependable power supply.

Key among the plans discussed was the progress on system reconfigurations already undertaken by ECG engineers to mitigate the effects of the challenges. Participants also reviewed contingency strategies to be implemented ahead of the commissioning of GRIDCo’s 50/66MVA power transformer—an essential project expected to significantly improve electricity supply to Obuasi and its surrounding areas.

As part of its emergency intervention, ECG has deployed two standby response teams to the Obuasi Bulk Supply Point (BSP). Each team is made up of five experienced engineers and technicians who have been tasked with monitoring the system for faults and responding swiftly to any interruptions or technical issues.

Additionally, work is ongoing on the construction of an upgraded overhead line (OHL) to support the transmission of a new 33kV power feed from GRIDCo to ECG’s Obuasi substation. This temporary measure is expected to enhance power reliability until the permanent transformer is installed and fully operational.

Speaking after the meeting, the General Manager of ECG Ashanti South, Ing. Daniel Mensah Asare, expressed ECG’s full commitment to resolving the power situation in Obuasi.

> “Obuasi is too important to be left in the dark. We are fully committed to providing the resources, manpower, and technical guidance needed to keep the power on for every home, business, and institution,” he stated.

He emphasized that ECG’s intervention is not just a reaction to public pressure, but part of a broader, coordinated strategy to ensure long-term energy security for critical industrial hubs like Obuasi.

Residents and businesses have hailed the move as timely and necessary, noting the toll the recent power disruptions have taken on productivity, health care services, and daily routines. With AngloGold Ashanti operating at the heart of Obuasi’s economy, uninterrupted electricity is not just a convenience but a necessity.

The collaborative effort between ECG, GRIDCo, AGA, and the Ministry of Energy signifies a strong multi-agency commitment to ensuring energy resilience in key urban and mining areas. It also reflects ECG’s evolving approach to energy delivery—one that emphasizes responsiveness, community engagement, and infrastructure investment.

As the emergency teams get to work and infrastructure upgrades continue, residents of Obuasi remain hopeful that consistent and reliable power will soon be restored, marking a turning point in the area’s long-standing energy challenges.
