Archbishop Porter Girls Old Students Kumasi Chapter Donates Sanitary Pads to Promote Menstrual Hygiene at Toase St. Peter’s R/C

The Kumasi Chapter of the Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High School Past Students Association has made a significant contribution towards promoting menstrual hygiene and girl-child education by donating 15 boxes of sanitary pads, along with assorted items including biscuits and soft drinks, to female pupils of Toase St. Peter’s R/C Basic School in the Ashanti Region.

The donation exercise, which took place at the school premises, forms part of the association’s broader efforts to support underprivileged schoolgirls and break the stigma often associated with menstruation. The intervention is timely and impactful, as many girls in rural and underserved communities are often forced to miss school during their menstrual periods due to lack of access to basic hygiene materials.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Augustina Nkrumah, President of the Kumasi Chapter of the Porter Girls Old Students, underscored the group’s commitment to girl-child welfare. She encouraged the pupils to prioritize their education and reassured them that menstruation should never be a barrier to academic progress.

“We understand the struggles that some girls go through during their menstrual cycles, especially in schools with limited resources. This donation is our small way of saying that we care and that you matter. Stay focused on your studies and always maintain good personal hygiene,” Mrs. Nkrumah advised.

She further noted that the gesture aligns with the chapter’s goal of mentoring and empowering young girls across the region through outreach and social responsibility initiatives.

Receiving the items on behalf of the school, Madam Tishy Dufie Manu, the Girl Child Coordinator, expressed profound appreciation to the past students for their generosity and thoughtfulness. According to her, the donation is not only a relief to many parents but also a boost to the confidence and dignity of the female students.

“This support goes beyond physical items; it is a statement that girls deserve to be healthy, confident, and uninterrupted in their education. It is also in line with the global movement to improve menstrual hygiene and end the silence around menstruation,” Madam Manu stated.

She appealed to other alumni associations and benevolent groups to emulate the gesture, adding that such support can help sustain girls’ attendance and performance in school.

The event ended with an interactive session, where the team engaged the students on menstrual hygiene management, personal care tips, and the importance of open conversations around menstruation.

This initiative by the Porter Girls Old Students not only reflects their enduring values of compassion and service but also sends a strong message about the power of collective action in addressing challenges that hinder the academic progress and wellbeing of young girls.
