Kumasi Mayor Teams Up with Police to Enforce 15% Transport Fare Reduction

Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has joined forces with the Ghana Police Service to enforce the recently announced 15% reduction in public transport fares within the Metropolis. This move comes in response to reports that some commercial drivers are refusing to comply with the new fare structure.

In a statement issued by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on May 26, 2025, the Mayor expressed concern over non-compliance by a section of transport operators, despite a national directive issued by the leadership of transport unions on May 24, 2025.

“As of May 24, 2025, the national leadership of transport unions announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, which all commercial transport operators are expected to implement,” the KMA stated.

The Assembly emphasized that any driver who fails to comply is violating the law. “It is important to note that any commercial driver who refuses to charge the approved reduced fare commits a criminal offense punishable by law,” the statement warned.

To ensure strict adherence, Mayor Ofori-Agyeman Boadi held a strategic meeting with the Head of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Kumasi. It was agreed during the meeting that police personnel would be deployed across key transportation hubs and major roads in the Metropolis to monitor, educate, and enforce compliance.

“We kindly request the public’s cooperation in this endeavor as we strive to restore order and sanity on our roads,” the statement appealed. The Mayor also encouraged commuters to report any cases of non-compliance to the authorities for swift action.

The KMA reiterated its commitment to fair transportation practices and urged all commercial drivers to respect the directive in the interest of public welfare and economic stability.

“We appreciate your understanding and support in this initiative,” the statement concluded.
