Asanteman Youth for Culture and Development Condemns Ongoing Attacks and Disrespect Against Otumfuo and Asanteman

An urgent press conference was held today by the Asanteman Youth for Culture and Development to address what they describe as coordinated verbal and physical attacks against Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and the entire Asanteman. The group expressed deep concern over the recent developments, emphasizing the sanctity of the Asantehene’s authority and the cultural heritage of the Asante people.

The spokesperson for the group, Nana Poku Siaw, alongside executive members Kwadwo Osei Hyiaman and Samuel Opoku Boateng, condemned the deliberate attempts to undermine the authority of the Asantehene. “We have observed disturbing efforts by certain individuals and groups aimed at discrediting Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, our revered king, and tarnishing the heritage of Asanteman,” the statement read.

*Tensions with Chiefs in Bono and Bono East Regions*

A significant portion of the press statement addressed ongoing tensions between some chiefs in the Bono and Bono East regions and the Asantehene. These chiefs have reportedly questioned Otumfuo’s authority in elevating chiefs to paramountcy. “Their claim that the Asantehene does not have the authority to elevate any chief to paramountcy exposes their ignorance of the constitutional provisions in Ghana,” said the group.

The statement emphasized that chiefs elevated to paramountcies within Asanteman have historically been done so by the authority of the Golden Stool. The group clarified that the role of the President of the Regional House of Chiefs is primarily administrative and does not grant powers to interfere with the customs and traditions of other members.

The press release highlighted the deep historical ties between Bono and Asanteman. “Bono is a province of Asanteman, alongside others such as Atwima, Sekyere, Kwabre, Adanse, Kwaman (Kumasi), Ahafo, Amansie, and Asante Akyem. A deliberate attempt by some to incite divisions within Bono is unfortunate.”

*Media General Called to Apologize*

The group also expressed outrage over the involvement of media personalities in fostering disrespect towards Otumfuo. “Afia Pokuaa, Mona Gucci, and their panellists have crossed all boundaries of respect with their recent programs,” the statement charged. The group demanded an unqualified apology from Media General, the media company behind these shows. “Their reckless actions have fanned the flames of division and dishonour, and they must be held accountable.”

A stern warning was issued to the media personalities, particularly Afia Pokuaa and her panellists, regarding their comments. “You will be held responsible for your words and actions. The damage caused by such inflammatory rhetoric is not something Asanteman will overlook.”

*Gallamsey Issue Should Not Be Politicized*

The press conference also touched on the ongoing illegal mining (popularly known as *gallamsey*) crisis, which continues to plague several regions in Ghana. The group stated unequivocally that the fight against illegal mining should not be politicized. “Gallamsey is a complex issue involving politicians, chiefs, and private individuals, but this menace should not be turned into a political weapon,” they stated.

They reiterated the commitment of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to the fight against illegal mining, reminding the public that the Asantehene had already destooled some chiefs involved in the practice. The group called on the government, politicians, and security agencies to complement the efforts of the Asantehene, particularly in the Central, Eastern, and Western regions.

*Call for Peace and Dialogue*

The group concluded by appealing for peace, dialogue, and respect for tradition. “In defending our heritage, King, and Asanteman, we strongly believe that peace and dialogue should be prioritized. That is why we are calling on the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the National House of Chiefs, the security agencies, and the National Peace Council to take immediate action.”

They lamented that the current chieftaincy disputes, especially those arising from the Bono region, could have been resolved earlier had these bodies acted proactively. “We serve notice to all who harbour intentions of disrespecting and attacking Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Asanteman. We are fully aware of your plans, and let it be known that henceforth, any attack or expression of disrespect toward Otumfuo the Asantehene will not be tolerated.”

The press conference concluded with a united call for calm and a return to mutual respect, as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II continues to lead Asanteman through these challenging times.
