Second ‘Hands Off Our Hotels’ demo to hit Cape Coast – Ablakwa announces

SecondSamuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the convenor of the “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration and MP for North Tongu, has announced a second protest in Cape Coast in the Central Region.

The North Tongu lawmaker led hundreds of Ghanaians in the “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration in Accra on Tuesday, June 18.

This follows his May 16 petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate and stop SSNIT from continuing with the sale of its hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong.

Moreover, Mr Ablakwa formally petitioned President Akufo-Addo to halt the sale of SSNIT’s 60 percent stake in the four hotels.

In an interview with Roland Walker on TV3 New Day on Wednesday, Mr Ablakwa underscored the need to take the demonstration to the Central Region should President Akufo-Addo fail to act on the petition “in the next few days.”

Also, two of the four hotels that the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has put up for sale, Elmina and Ridge Royal, are located in the Central Region.

Additionally, Mr Ablakwa cited a letter that the Omanhene of the Edina Traditional Council had written against the sale of one of the hotels at Elmina, indicating that there would certainly be a second part of the protest if the president did not act on the demands of the demonstrators to halt the sale.

In a post on Facebook on Thursday, the North Tongu legislator assured the chiefs and people of the Central Region of his readiness to lead the second part of the protest in the region.

Mr Ablakwa said, “May I respectfully assure the revered chiefs and good people of the Central Region who have called us for a patriotic partnership to stage the next #HandsOffOurHotels demonstration since they are vehemently opposed to the sale of Elmina Beach Hotel and Ridge Royal Hotel both in the Central Region that we have unanimously agreed and resolved to hold a similar massive protest in the Central Region if President Akufo-Addo fails to stop the sales within the next few days.
With this nationalistic determination, State Capture shall surely be defeated.”
“Don’t mess with the power of the people!” he cautioned.
