A 25-year-old driver, Emmanuel Kye, who assisted in clearing a motorbike which got involved in an accident but later stole it, has been convicted to two years imprisonment by an Adentan Circuit Court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo.
The convict returned to the scene and claimed he was a relative of the accident victim who had been sent to collect the motorbike.
On April 25, 2023, he was convicted to two years imprisonment by an Adentan Circuit Court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo. On April 25, 2023, he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and begged the judge for mercy but that did not work.
Presenting the facts of the case, Chief Inspector Juliana Awuku said the complainant/accident victim was one Clement Kojo, who lived at Dodowa, while the convict resided at Adentan-Amanfrom in Accra.
C/Insp Awuku said on February 12, 2023, the complainant, who wanted to attend a church programme at Pokuase, borrowed the said motorbike from one Richard at Dodowa.
The prosecutor said on his way, the complainant got involved in a head-on collision with a saloon car when he reached a spot near the Mother Love Hospital at Adentan-Mile 11.
According to the prosecutor, the impact of the accident landed the complainant and his motorbike in a gutter rendering him unconscious.
The convict, who was riding a bicycle along the same route, chanced upon the accident scene and stopped to assist other road users to clear the road.
The prosecutor said the convict and the saloon car driver conveyed the complainant to a nearby hospital for medical care.
The convict then returned to the scene, took the motorbike and went into hiding.
The prosecutor said on April 20, 2023, police intelligence led the arrest of the convict at Dodowa. During interrogation, the convict confessed to having stolen and sold the motorbike to one Nana at Madina, Zongo Junction for GH¢2,400.
C/Insp Awuku added that the convict, however, could not lead the police to the said Nana and after investigations, he was charged and put before the court.
